  2.  @c.rutherford  I think it goes back to Muscovy's struggle to throw off the Tatar yoke: for example they introduced serfdom (after most of western Europe had abolished it) because of their need to support a continuous line of defence (near the Ugra and Oka rivers) to protect Moscow and its immediate hinterland against nomadic invaders.
