The closest Ukrainian equivalent of that quote (or perhaps more analogous to the Ben Franklin liberty vs. safety quote) is as follows: "Коли поміж хлібом і свободою народ обирає хліб, він зрештою втрачає все, в тому числі і хліб. Якщо народ обирає свободу, він матиме хліб, вирощений ним самим і ніким не відібраний." Translation: "When a people chooses bread between bread and freedom, it ultimately loses everything, including bread. If a people chooses freedom, it will have bread grown by itself and not taken away by anyone."

I ended up teaching myself how to sing the March of Ukrainian Nationalists.

@beth7935 I guess Hangul is more difficult that Cyrillic, because Cyrillic and Latin share a common ancestor in Greek. About 15 years ago I did also use the "Muslim Kid School" videos to teach myself Arabic script.

Why do the CCP hate Tesla cars? (Other than the fact that they're not built by a Chinese company of course...)

@tada8092 in Ukrainian of course, and yes I could write it out as well. Although I have found an English version of the song at https://youtu.be/n_ahV0akvYQ

@0e32 Isn't it now the Hungarians more than the Turks who are playing silly-buggers w.r.t. Sweden's NATO application?

Aren't many Russian ICBMs liquid fuelled, meaning they would require more maintenance than the solid-fuel Minuteman missiles in the US arsenal?

At least one of the things that used to give China a huge amount of soft power (ie Zero Covid) ended up collapsing.

I'd think it was that ICBMs are so fast that they're almost impossible to shoot down, and are quicker to launch (and more accurate) than submarine-based ballistic missiles.

@bungalowjuice7225 The missiles themselves are indeed very similar: the disadvantage in accuracy is because the location of a submarine isn't known as precisely as that of a fixed silo, while the disadvantage in speed of launch is due to the difficulty in communicating with a submerged submarine. SLBMs are ideal second-strike weapons but very poor first-strike weapons: this may be why the UK (whose small geographic area and dense population mean it would stand no chance in a nuclear war) chose a purely submarine-based nuclear deterrent.

Aren't billionaires as a class usually freaks, given that most normal people would retire if they managed to make a few million dollars, rather than carry on struggling to make even more money?

"then you show the clips of Ukrainian children playing and Russian children being trained for war.Why does that remind me of a scene in Prelude to War (the first of the famous Why We Fight series of World War II propaganda films)?
