  2. Isn't it just that the current state of military technology (like during World War I) favours the defender, as advancing tank columns are now easy meat for drones and anti-tank missiles? The Russians didn't realize this (hence the talk of a "3-day special military operation") but nor did the West (because they put Russia's initial failure against Kyiv down to incompetence).
