@ghyslainabel While both coal and nuclear power plants are essentially steam engines, natural gas power plants are more like jet engines: they can change their power output much more quickly, which makes them ideal for backing up unreliable wind and solar power. This synergy between natural gas and renewables is the main reason why many countries have become so dependent on natural gas for electricity generation, which is of course one of the reasons why the Russians (as one of the world's biggest natural gas producers) thought they could get away with this war: they put their faith in "King Gas" just as the Confederacy did in "King Cotton".
