@sarjim4381 there are lots of things that go through the bulkheads, like pipes, electrical cables, etc, and those penetrations need to be fireproofed.
It's cheaper and far more shock resistant to cut a hole in the bulkhead than it is to put hard mounted connections on each bulkhead, but then you have a hole in the watertight integrity that needs to be packed full. The packing materials used weren't fireproof because that was more expensive. I don't know that I can give you a link, I got that story from a gent by the name of David Manley, who is a pretty well known naval historian.
As for adopting the fal, the smle is honestly just as fast to shoot from prone as the garand. Gunny Ermey (rip, Gunny) did a race against a British YouTuber with an smle, breaking plates. The only reason Gunny won is because that enbloc clip was faster to reload than 2x stripper clips.
