  1. I'm surprised that the backups are offset to the left, if they had been offset to the right at an angle it would have been trivial to switch between optics and irons, like modern 3gun competition shooters do.

  2.  @sarjim4381  there are lots of things that go through the bulkheads, like pipes, electrical cables, etc, and those penetrations need to be fireproofed. It's cheaper and far more shock resistant to cut a hole in the bulkhead than it is to put hard mounted connections on each bulkhead, but then you have a hole in the watertight integrity that needs to be packed full. The packing materials used weren't fireproof because that was more expensive. I don't know that I can give you a link, I got that story from a gent by the name of David Manley, who is a pretty well known naval historian. As for adopting the fal, the smle is honestly just as fast to shoot from prone as the garand. Gunny Ermey (rip, Gunny) did a race against a British YouTuber with an smle, breaking plates. The only reason Gunny won is because that enbloc clip was faster to reload than 2x stripper clips.

  3. Not really. My svt40 has a stripper clip guide and it's a (expletives deleted) to load from stripper clips. It's seriously faster to drop the magazine and reload the mag than fight the stripper clips. And that's with a rifle that only has one good magazine!

  9.  @juhajarkkoulvila7041  try http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/products/fal-metric-inch.html. Note that those are unfinished, but boiled linseed oil and sandpaper are cheap. Bit pricey, but buying non matched will be cheaper than a matched set. I bought a tiger maple stock set from ironwood for my PSL, and loved it. I believe that unfinished stocks are not an export controlled item if you're outside the US.

  11.  @sarjim4381  I think it's because the us army was trying to give every grunt a walking fire rifle. Also, by buying new rifles they employed a bunch of people during the depression.

  12.  @sarjim4381  well, the first argument I have for you is to never underestimate the desire of HMGovernment to not spend money where it's actually needed. Like how they didn't pay for fireproofing the bulkhead fittings on the ships in the Falklands, which then burned out. The Russians were also trying to issue semi-auto rifles to their entire army, but the svt is a bit finicky for giving to conscripts. Worked great in the naval infantry, tho, and as a dmr in spetsnaz platoons. It was also hideously expensive to make.

I said that the US makes a point of fighting in someone else's country, and that we don't have a lot of sandy deserts here in the US, they're all rocky deserts. Of fucking course we test weapons in the US. But what we have in-house is not a sandy desert. Nevada is a rocky desert. Utah is more of the same rocky desert. Arizona and New Mexico are more of that same rocky desert. Hell, even half of Idaho and half of Oregon is a different rocky desert (a very close analog to Afghanistan, actually, rocky hills with green valley bottoms, so close that the Army has been using Idaho as a final training area for units deploying to Afghanistan).
