The full line is, "the purpose of a pistol is to let you fight your way back to the long gun you never should have put down in the first place."

@alexmoore1506 yes, but the match safety rules typically don't like that. So we had it flopped wherever.

@randymagnum143 the reputation of 545 comes from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, where the US and others (like Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, etc) were seeing the wounds. If you're restricted to non-expanding ammo like the military, a bullet that tumbles is better than one that doesn't. And the 545 is much more likely to tumble than the .30 carbine due to bullet length. As to the 5.7, apparently the military ss190 ammo tumbles nicely. The civilian ammo doesn't, but will expand and fragment.

@Tadicuslegion78 a lot of people are saying that the GIs were looking for reasons that they didn't miss. Misadjusted sights, bad range guess (shooting at troops 400y away and thinking they're within 200), etc. Not sure about malfunctions, those are probably legit for any semi-auto trying to work at -30degC. Even the mighty Garands froze up at the Chosin Reservoir.

Yep, the "Light Rifle" requirements are the first example of a pdw. And arguably, with the select fire capability that was originally part of the specs, it was the first assault rifle, too.

@alexmoore1506 yeah, I demonstrated that to a shipyard worker who thought it would be funny to make the armed guard checking his bag jump. Good thing the rifle was Condition 3.

You're welcome to move to a place where you can buy them!

@ivanperkovic6295 yes. The LONGEST pistol shots I was trained on in the Navy were 7m. Beyond that is rifle work!

@flightlesschicken7769 the 545 tumbles like an acrobat after it hits something soft.

@flightlesschicken7769 while making the .30 carbine bullet tumble will increase wounding potential, the entire bullet is very short for caliber, maybe .67" long. A 545 bullet is more than an inch long, which means a larger wound cavity when tumbling.

A pistol is easier to carry all day, it's half the weight of even an m1 carbine and just sits on your belt. A carbine is so much easier to hit with.
