  2. Probably start with a new brake that directs more blast back instead of to the sides. And instead of springs in the buttstock go with a gas shock. Gas is compressible, so it takes the big movement, then hydraulics to smooth out the force. New trigger will help accuracy, as will some padding on the cheek rest so you can watch the shot.

  14.  @Psiberzerker  gotta agree with that. Once you gotta tow it around on wheels, it's no longer small arms. And yes, the M2A1 is right at the upper edge for my personal definition of small arms, it's barely man portable.

  15.  @Psiberzerker  well, a sufficiently annoyed platoon sergeant can make the Ma Deuce one-man portable. Can't imagine how bad you'd have to piss him off to have to carry the whole weapon and tripod, though I know people have had to carry the assembled weapon. I know I'd hate to have to hump it for any distance longer than "off the disabled vehicle we are about to burn down"

  17.  @Psiberzerker  I didn't say it was normal. Tripod is usually lashed on top of the pack, right? Lash the assembled gun to the pack, then the tripod on top of that. Then you're hand carrying one ammo can in each hand with any personal rifle slung. And it's probably going to take a working party to drag you to your feet, since you have an extra 90lbs above whatever the usual load is. Probably carrying over 250lbs all told by that point, maybe 300. Which is not pleasant, but doable if you're close to 250lbs yourself.

  18.  @Psiberzerker  yes, the total receiver+barrel+tripod package is 130lbs. You're already carrying one part of that normally. And yes, I was thinking cans of ammo. One in each hand, 80rds total (though I thought .50cal cans were bigger than that) Won't be combat effective for long. This is more of a "you have done something immensely stupid and need to be punished so hard you never even think about doing it again!!!!"

  19.  @Psiberzerker  no. I said that I had seen a picture of some dumb bastard carrying the receiver with barrel installed. No tripod. I don't remember if he was packing ammo cans in each hand or not, it's been almost 20 years.

  20.  @Psiberzerker  and yes, I can tell the difference between a 1919 and an M2. 1919 has a barrel shroud the full length of the barrel while Ma Deuce has a short fat shroud. Not to mention that the US hasn't had a 1919 in army or marine service since about 1991, and those were the coax MGs on the M60 tanks.

  21.  @Psiberzerker  Fuck, dude, they weren't my pictures. A marine friend of mine had them, and I haven't seen him in fucking years. I'm honestly not sure if he's still on this side of the daisies, dude went back to the sandbox as a contractor. As to different size ammo cans, I have two within arm's reach of me and the 5.56 can of 400 in boxes will fit inside the 7.62 can of 200 on belts. Like i said, you'd be carrying 250-300 lbs total load and need a whole damn working party to haul you to your feet. And I don't think you could carry it very far, nor be very effective for long with it due to not much ammo. But it can be done for a punishment detail. See also the fun video of a guy carrying a full Vickers gun with ammo on tripod for the Remote Brutality rifle competition that InRange did. Throwing two cans in the backpack (some 90lbs), pick up the gun, move to where the pack landed, fire a burst, throw the pack, repeat.

  24.  @GianmarioScotti  more than "a bit" hot. That round had to be over 160kpsi to shear the threads and 1/4" steel plate "ears" like it did. That's 3x the standard BMG pressure.
