@Hawk1966 honestly, gold seems to work better for inflation before the 1930s. Gold was $20 an ounce from the founding of the US till 1933, IIRC.

@kevinwestermann1001 for that long ago, remember that the dollar was pegged to the cost of gold ($20.67 an ounce if you're being exact, $20 for a quick mental calculation) so the cost of a loaf of bread actually tracks with the cost of gold. Works pretty well up to the start of industrial farming.
