  7. An athlete has less fat so doesn’t float as well. Few people have strength to fight back through a rip. It could be moving 2 or 3 miles an hour.

  9. It wasn’t very good as an explanation. If you find yourself moving away from the shore, swim parallel to the beach. Don’t exhaust yourself against the rip current by trying to go straight back to the beach. The rip always dissipates , always. Learn how to float on your back and do a backstroke if you need to. When you first get to a beach, talk to the lifeguard and ask about conditions. They will point out any rips. And they will appreciate that you asked. If you use a boogie board, make sure it has a leash to you can attach to your wrist.
