It's legalized in the most of the U.S. at this point, and more states legalize every year. It usually passes with huge public support, like 70-30 in favor. I'm always stunned Europe is so conservative over THAT, of all things.

It was very rare in the U.S. for anyone to actually be physically in prison for possession of marijuana (selling was a different charge) but yes, they did let people out of jail in some cases, and they cleared their records so they could legally answer "no" if asked if they had ever been convicted of a crime. The issue in the U.S. is that it's still federally illegal, despite many states having legalized it themselves. So you cannot conduct cannabis business in between states, and it is difficult to participate in the banking system. The federal government does not arrest people for possession of marijuana but they will still charge people for selling it. Our system works well in some situations, but very very poorly in this one. The laws need many changes still, even though I can legally buy and consume cannabis where I live with no penalties. I would, however, need a license from the state to sell it.
