@gunther_hermann - That is probably my favorite story out of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Only one part was left out: the U.S. Navy did not know the sub was carrying nuclear weapons and they were dropping depth charges that only were about the size of a simple hand grenade in order to signal the Russian sub to surface. They weren't actually attacking it in order to destroy or sink it, but under the Soviet rules of engagement a strike could have been authorized even if the smallest of weaponry was used.

@GaslitWorld f. Melissa B - I disagree. If any word can be used to describe Kim, it's "paranoid." He might not particularly care about his people, but he cares about his own lifestyle of luxury and the continuity of the family dynasty. Starting nuclear wars really puts a damper on things.

Always get a chuckle out of the phrase "In HARM's way" based on an incident that happened some years ago. Back in the Gulf War, a USAF F-4 Phantom II accidentally fired an anti-radiation missile (the kind you would use to target enemy radar stations, called the HARM missile) at a friendly B-52 after the bomber, which was then outfitted with a tail-gunner, now removed, likewise thought the F-4 was a bandit, specifically an Iraqi MiG. There were no casualties on either side and the B-52 returned to service, but was renamed (and had painted on her fuselage) "In HARM's Way" named after the missile.

@johnw2026 - She remains in service but is now assigned to the Peruvian Coast Guard, rather than the Navy, I believe.

@jimdecamp7204 - The only places I know of where ATC uses a language other than English is France and some Latin American countries where they use Spanish if the pilots are native Spanish speakers, however they'll switch to English for any foreign flights. It's probably not the best, or safest, way to do things, but it's just how it is.

I didn't understand that, either, and plan to do some research of my own. Fortunately I have some good friends in that part of the world who might be able to better explain it. I'm not sure what one would expect a superpower to do if another country allowed the vice president to be kidnapped and potentially killed by an angry mob.

In fairness, Bush 43, Obama and Trump all visited Afghanistan under extremely risky circumstances. I'm sure there were special forces in place and more advanced security measures, but a war zone is a war zone. Just flying into Afghanistan is a brave thing to do for a US President.

Lol... after all these years Lockheed-Martin is finally just marketing it literally as the Viper in its latest variant.

@brianreddeman951 - It was settled in the Webster–Ashburton Treaty of 1842, about 20 years after the "war." It basically just split the small area in half. I believe Canada got a little more land than the US, but agreed to give the US some land along the border in Minnesota to equal things out.

I watched another documentary on this and they mentioned that the man who stole the player's hat went on to become a successful business owner who was given the Citizen of the Year award in the suburban town he lived in.

@bennettmarshall7881 - It's not like he said it publicly. And we're just going on someone else's word that he said it at all. I'm sure all presidents speak at ease during private conversation. The reality is that there are some pretty disgusting corners of the world. I've been to a few of them. It doesn't mean the people are bad, but there are countries that simply cannot get their collective acts together and are their own worst enemies. As a consequence, they lack basic infrastructure and services and, in turn, are dirty, rife with disease and have open sewers. This isn't rocket science.

@christiansmith2730 - I'm stunned there are so many socialists (the modern incarnation of the Democrat party) who are watching history videos. Perhaps they are pining for the good ol' days when they could head to the USSR for their honeymoon and sip vodka while political prisoners rotted away in gulags.

It sure can! And there's even a video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA6c0CBuCwo

@brustar5152 - Huh? Before the F-35B, the only American VTOL plaform was built by the British and improved under license to produce the B variant by McDonnell-Douglas. Besides Hawker-Siddeley and Yakovlev, there wasn't a ton going on in that space.

@jimnielsen4076 - The fatal error was in failing to allow export of the F-22 to a limited number of strategic allies – namely Japan and Israel. Now, Japan is left without a fifth-gen air superiority platform just as China is rolling out the J-20. They're rushing to complete their own. Allowing F-22 export could have lessened the cost, and perhaps even set aside enough funding for a navalized version that could have been a true replacement for the F-14.

That would be very interesting. Just began reading a bit about this based on your comment. Had not been aware of this beforehand. Would to see THG's take on it.

Being involved in development from the legal side, I don't believe this should be put on the ultimate property owner. Whatever company came in and developed this piece of land probably did do environmental and engineering studies about the subject property. Given the fact that this was so many decades ago, it probably legitimately passed whatever protocols were in place at the time. Hazardous materials were simply not considered as dangerous or even worth regulating in the not-too-distant past. If one were to look back at records, my guess is that they hired the engineers and planners, presented their case to a planning board, received the proper state and local approvals, and built the homes. If the government knew there was something hazardous, it was their responsibility to A) Not sell the site to a private owner in the first place or at least B) Place a restriction on the deed against residential development.
