Regarding witches: The underlying reason for these "trials" was actually land possession. Most of the accused "witches" were widows of men who were large land owners. After they were found "guilty" (or declared they were innocent, which was interpreted as guilt in and of itself) they were put to death and the land was divided up among the remaining families in the community, usually land owners looking to expand their existing plots.
