They're not lightning maps. They're FIRMS maps which are measured using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer system via NASA satellite. There are also some private satellite firms that license the use of their synthetic aperture radar tech to measure fire activity.

Steve Arthur They have not, at least at this point. Russia's short-range air defence systems are atrocious, and the long-range systems can't hit the western smart artillery, as evidenced thus far.

Steve Arthur Actually, it appears they cannot, at least in the current battlespace. They are well equipped to do so in some circumstances, such as a naval engagement, but this seems to be a weak point. Russia doesn't really have an analogue to the C-RAM system used by the US except for the AK-630 close-in gun, but that has never been adapted for shore use.

@societyreborn33 Then why haven't any of their systems worked, well, anywhere? They failed in Syria. Failed in Libya. Failed in Ukraine. Israel openly mocks Russian air defense by flying F-35s right into the kill zone and taking a photograph of themselves doing it. Either the Russians designed some poor SAM platforms or they have idiots running them. Has to be one or the other. The US think tanks also thought the Orcs would take Kyiv in three days lol.

Steve Arthur I know they've developed all of these systems. But their track record is horrendous. Regardless of the theater or intensity, their vaunted air defense just fails over and over again. Nobody in US military or NATO circles is particularly concerned about it.

Soviet ammo is 152mm. Western is 155mm.
