Japan is a military ally of the U.S. Adding to their defense is what military allies do. You might also consider the fact that the U.S still has restrictions in place on how Japan is "allowed" to develop in a military capacity following the aftermath of WWII. Basically, the U.S has neutered Japans ability to defend itself fully, yet you claim that the U.S had no responsibility whatsoever in adding to the defense of Japan? That's like me taking all your guns away, saying that you can't own any weapons, but I'll also refuse come to your aid when you're being assaulted on account of being unarmed and defenseless. As long as these oppressive and archaic restrictions are in place and enforced by the U.S, they DO have a responsibility to protect Japan whether you like it or not.

Neo Harbison: Well... Are they wrong? Compared to violent crime statistics in Japan, America might as well be considered Somalia or South Africa.

I would wonder why the Japanese defense force didn't shoot it down before it passed over the country. If it had been a MIRV it could've used the overflight to scatter multiple nuclear warheads across Japan, and neither the americans or the japanese had any way of knowing what the missile was armed with on it's approach. Generally it's better to shoot down any foreign missile with a trajectory that's passing over your own country. Just letting it fly is courting disaster.

Except for the fact that most of them will assume that you are Chinese. :P

leon xu: Japan did not start the war. The U.S and their military enforced trade and oil embargoes did.

nookiemindless14: No, I don't need to be in order to be able to look at statistical surveys of crime in different countries and compare them.
7
Kat: It's not even comparable. A more accurate description would be two children, but you've stripped all means of the other childs parents to protect their child. Because that is what the U.S have done to Japan.

what what: The problem is assuming that Kim Jong Un is in any way a rational human being. He's had a terribly warping upbringing by one of the most insane dictators the world has ever known. Being an heir of an oppressive dictatorship and being born in the lap of luxury will have terrible effects on the mindset of a child, and it is unlikely to result in them growing up to become a responsible and rational human being. Kim Jong Un could very well start a nuclear war, due to his inherent instability and genuine belief in the personality cult surrounding the Kim family that he has been fed with since he was born.

what what You don't have to be rational or sane to realize that a starving population is a weak population which will be unable to take up arms against you. He is not an effective leader. He's just an average tyrant. Firing a missile over japanese soil is a pretty definitive proof of his insanity and over-confidence.

KartoffelHundin: Why should they be "grateful"? America is the reason why the japanese can't protect themselves in the first place. Following WWII, America imposed restrictions on the defeated Japan that forbid them from develop a sufficient military force of their own, basically cutting off their arms and legs in terms of military defense. So the Japanese have no reason whatsoever to be "grateful" for U.S military intervention. The U.S are oppressing Japan just as much as North Korea is.

PhantomGlitch You think "size" determines how effective a military force is. I guess the U.S is completely fucked then, if China ever decides to declare war on the U.S. But most of us who know something about military matters know that is not the case. Also, after the top 3 militaries there's a pretty huge drop-off rate. So saying that Japans military is "7th biggest in the world" doesn't really mean anything.
3
what what: Exactly. U.S warships should stop patrolling the south china sea and start patrolling their own coasts.

Ugrena: The soldiers in North Korea aren't kept starving. The civilian population is. Turning your country to impoverished shit will not improvr the morale of the troops since they will question what they're really fighting for.
