The reason why swearing is used more casually here in the west is because western culture has developed to value individualism and social independence whereas Japan has a culture that idealize conformity and collectivism. When we casually drop swearwords it's a demonstration of "toughness". We do it to show that we're not afraid of what other people might think or say about us, confident that we'll survive through skill and ability rather than through politeness. But there is a somewhat strict hierarchy involved in the practice. For instance you might be more casual with your swearing among friends, but you put on your best manners if you're in the company of your elders (like your boss at work, your parents or grandparents, or your spouses parents). It's kind of like the same thing in Japan where you bow very deeply and respectfully to seniors and adress them with honorary suffixes like "senpai", "sama" or "sensei". In certain social settings, swearing casually will reduce your social status. But in others it might increase your social status. The trick is to know when and where it is more or less appropriate to swear.

They did the right thing. Islam does not belong in civilized societies.

IngLouisSchreurs: Incorrect. Western culture has contained profanity for the reasons listed well before the sixties. Sailors for instant were notorious for swearing a lot even as far back as the 1800's. As were the working classes in general.
