Insane people can act with premaditation though. They may be perfectly normal in every other regard, except for their mental illness. Like shizophrenia, where it doesn't really afflict the individual person in sucj a way where they can't think or plan actions at all. It's just that they're plagued with extremely realistic hallucinations that will influence their actions and behaviour. That said, I don't really believe that the arsonist is insane. Sounds more like an extremely disgruntled employee.

@CarrotCakeMake No it wouldn't for me. After all, it wasn't the employees who hypothetically stole his work, but executives. So if he had, for example, brought a gun to work and shot the executives of the company guilty of the theft, I might've changed my opinion a little, even if murder would've been an extremely rash action. But he doused the entire place in gasoline and lit it on fire, not caring about whether guilty or innocent people would get hurt. That's unforgivable.

@CarrotCakeMake Not really. But i'd argue that the crime was not entirely unprovoked. Provided that the crime took place the way I described it and not by the arsonist setting fire to the entire building.

I don't think it would be right for the arsonist family to be forced to pay for compensation. They didn't commit any crime. So it's a good thing that the arsonist is held solely responsible. As for the company having to pay for all the losses, surely they must've had their building and equipment insured?
