This man's attitude is what all young people need. That 'click' he refers to is a big deal. Many kids are never introduced to it. You work, doing stuff you'd rather not do - then you get paid for doing it. 'Clinically smart' indeed.

@kieronshepherd4445 Dial it back a bit mate. Not patronising anyone. It's a lesson best learned when young that's all.

@kieronshepherd4445 Have a lovely life Kieron.

@SleazyRoseWalker Fair enough.

@gee_emm Fair point. I've been there. I changed jobs.
3
@gee_emm Nor is it permanent.
3
@gee_emm Glad we agree. Those on low pay are not held there forever.

@gee_emm No chastisement here. My information comes from working for 43 years, some of it low-paid, some of it a bit higher, not much. These 'socialist leaning' countries where you are better off? Where?

I'm in UK, watching this 4 months later. I'm wondering, has it clicked yet with American people as to what is happening before their eyes? That the best country the world has to offer, is being turned into a socialist state? Your businesses - just like ours - are being held underwater until they stop their pesky entrepreneurial, freedom-loving twitching. When that happens (as it is doing every day) the people who used to work in those businesses are at the mercy of the state. Restaurants 'allowed to re-open'. Token gesture to make it look like a return to full operation is one day possible. The reality is, the whole hospitality sector and the entertainment sector will never return. Rise up somehow or prepare to become slaves to the new boss. Not same as the old boss.

Much criticism here of Mike Baker's explanation of the motives on either side regarding the UK's exit from the EU. In the limited time available, I would say he didn't do bad at all.

@gee_emm What game? You accuse me of criticising young people. I teach young people and I have helped so many to get back on the right track. I teach English but before any of that, I teach them the core values that will help them look after themselves. Why are you reacting so wildly?
2
@Fuq2 I worked sometimes in jobs I didn't like, but mostly it was good. The money I earned, I bought what I needed and some stuff I just wanted. I've never given a shit about impressing anyone. So you're talking shit.
2
@Fuq2 I've never worked in retail. I'm sure there are lots of people who really enjoy working at Walmart, even though such employment is obviously way beneath you. (I'm an English tutor by the way. My tip for you would be to use quotation marks when using someone else's words) No charge on that.

Diplamatik Juan Poor you.

And now a year and a half later; look how Washington reacted.

That reference to Vaclav Pavel is core to maintaining self-integrity. They insist I wear a mask. I won't wear their mask. It is a sign I believe the lies they are telling people. If I join that lie, I have nothing of me left. “In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.” Theodore Dalrymple.

These people who speak up for the mooted UBI: it's anticipated at GBP1500 per month; how long do they think it will remain at that level once the proles are captured?

I'm in UK. I was the contented master of my own kingdom. I am now under house arrest, no visitors allowed. A Conservative government guided by communist SAGE did this.

@chris3937 I'm in the think for myself brigade. Did you want to ask a worthwhile question?

This self-deceit is central to the state we're in. Here in UK we have a welfare system that encourages illness. Anyone with an internet connection can find out the symptoms of some condition that precludes working, and feign those symptoms. It's easy enough to do and it's tempting to many. I have known people in the past who have got onto this track - and I noticed something about them. After a while they begin to believe their own fabrication - they perform the act so studiously that it seeps into them - they designate themselves as dependent on medicinal care. In time they adopt the stance and outlook of people who are genuinely in poor condition and they go downhill from there. It's as though when they gave up their truth to themselves, they lost the power to self-direct in any positive way. A relative of mine works in the NHS and she says she and all her co-workers even have a term for these people: they're referred to as 'serial attendees'.

Be proud of your accent whoever you are, wherever you come from. It's not called Mother Tongue for nothing.

Funny, just in the space of the last two weeks I've read three articles in different magazines, all of them detailing the terrible damage that alcohol does to the human body. Gave me a bit of a fright so I decided right then and there: no more magazines.
1
@gee_emm Now name me a country that has no socialist leaning.
1
@Fuq2 Actually, you might very well be onto something there: we should all win the lottery and everything will be lovely.
1
@Fuq2 Chin up old bean!
1
@Fuq2 You are most welcome.

It's a simple thing to grasp: vote socialist, get socialism.
