Remember as well the surplus graduates of humanities (soft sciences) courses, compared to the high demand of STEM (sci-tech, engineering and math) graduates for high end manufacturing and engineering, life sciences and healthcare, space, applied materials and chemicals, agriculture, defense and the information tech sectors - something China needs to achieve tech self-sufficiency amidst the ongoing rivalry with the US. European countries like Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the Nordic countries have vocational courses, interestingly - its structure is similar to mainstream 5-year engineering courses, with a 1 year apprenticeship. These protests obviously don't represent the majority of the populace.
