What if putin is dead, either for years or maybe recently due to Covid and all they have is a double .The russian millitary is in control of the government and there is no actual government per se ? That sure would explain why a guy that supposedly loves his country would send hundreds of thousands of russian citizens to die in a pointless invasion. It also explains why the only reaction russia had to Ukraine showing signs of becoming more friendly to Europe was millitary action and why the corruption and failiure wasn't considered a risk.
