If the State were not invented then a nation couldn't occupy non contiguous territory. The king of England could not extend England into the parts of France or North America his forces had taken control of. Empires and overseas territories cannot be considered parts of a nation, but more like seed beds preparing for the propagation of new nations. The people of New Zealand regarded themselves as English before independence. The colony became an independent nation with a separate nationality when it created an independent state apparatus. So the Zionists are statists, and the non Zionist Israelis are tribal nationalists.

It's interesting how he asserts nationalism is a 19th century phenomenon. A nation today is being defined as a group of people with similar cultural traits and values. The State (the territory taxed by a regime) is today considered the nation, but this is not what "nationality" used to mean. There was a time when invading foreign territory was viewed as a respectable proof of superiority. In such times the nation invaded. Today we see not a nation, but an economic regime invading territory. This is where cultural Marxism and political Islam have blind sided liberal secular democratic states. Secular liberal democracies see cultural ties, values and epistemologies as contain able within the state. Little do Westerners understand their states are being colonised by anti-liberal allegiances. Zionism is a Western idea, the creation of a territory governed by a secular state, not governed by uniform shared values and beliefs beyond belief in the state. This is a very Christian idea, the idea of the individual. Before Christianity only Buddhism place the task of individuation before people separate from their allegiance to their family, their people.
