I wonder if, when joining social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp etc, you did not permit them to access your Contacts List - whether they would still allow you to join, or whether they would refuse your membership. If everyone who joined these sites suddenly stopped allowing them to access their Contacts, would that help to alleviate the problem, of these sites being able to develop profiles for non-users?
I always assumed that sites like Facebook had the ability to develop such profiles of non-users, if the friends of those non-users who WERE Facebook users, started to "tag" their non-user friends by their names, in group photos which they posted on Facebook. So Facebook then had a non-user name matched with their face/photo. Then there was also the possibility of those non-user names & faces/photos being associated/linked with the same names from the user's Contact List, which had previously been downloaded to Facebook.
