Given that the more-conservative candidates kept their seats and many of the less-conservative ones lost them, how is that "clearly" the case?

"...clearly, your expectations of conservatives are wrong." No. You're conflating two different concepts. In hindsight, perhaps I should have made myself clearer. To quote Macmillan dictionary on "expect": 1) "to think that something will happen". If I thought that conservatives wouldn't sell out to the left, I would have been mistaken, as you say. But I didn't think that. 2) "to think that it is right or reasonable that something should happen". I was telling you what I thought should happen with conservatives. You can't accuse me of being mistaken in what I thought should happen.
