If it still feels like compulsory conscription is necessary, they can just cut the time limit. I heard young people lose out a lot because it's compulsory and after all, this is not going to be of use until Kim Jong-un gets whacky. What's the meaning of imprisoning them? If you really find that their arguments are not good enough, just simply tell them they have to serve. Isn't this quite an authoritarian thing that may have continued from the dictatorial regime of Syngman Rhee??

@fjp9 Just tell them that they have to serve. And they haven't done a crime if they don't want to serve! It'll be better if they are put into non-combat roles in the military like doctors, nurses and engineers or cooks, janitors, logistics etc. These all are required in the military too. My country, India didn't show military support to either North or South during the Korean War, but we sent a medical regiment that treated injured soldiers on both sides, yes both sides, it remained in Korea for 4-5 years. It is considered as one of the most critical medical regiments ever. I must say, don't be comparable to North Korea and their Songun policy, which kills whosoever refuses to serve. South Korea is a much better and developed nation and it should reflect in its laws.

@fjp9 I'm not talking about ending compulsory conscription. Koreans would better know what to do with it. And think about it, it doesn't happen in other countries that if you don't serve in the military, you are perceived as a traitor and imprisoned, right? Even if they want compulsory conscription, imprisoning those who evaded the law isn't the right thing, and it won't do any good either. It's against basic humanity.
