Tariffs are not protectionism, it is calibration of trade. Canada has a MASSIVE trade deficit with China already and this tariffs is only on future trade increase so it won't change the current deficit that is already massive. Keep in mind that Canada does not manipulate the value if the Canadian Dollar unlike China that does manipulate it's currancy. Also, if you go back in time 70 years all countries had to have balanced trade as most trade was done in Gold, in that case any country that has a trade deficit loses their gold reserve to another country this would dramatically slow the trade with China and the Chinese economy would probably be 2/3 smaller if we had a global gold standard so China needs to be VERY VERY thankfully that the world is using FIAT instead, but as a result countries need to use Tariffs to have some control over trade to prevent it from going too crazy deep in to deficit. You need some fair balance .

China does subsidize local industry with keeping the Yuan weak. That is subsidy.

This is just normal trade relations, China has tariffs on many countries as well, just normal trade relations. EU and USA have tariffs on each other. Canada and USA have tariffs, this is VERY normal. right??

you can make EVs affordable without depending on imports. Keep in mind wages in China are only 1/2 of Canada not that much lower, 1/2 is not much savings and might as well hire Canadians = boost to economy so more people can afford to buy EVs

@robertloke6285 What is your counter argument instead of just saying BS?

@paulrobbieparker3983 So give me your counter argument?

That is not how it works, Tariffs are very very normal part of global trade, the USA has tariffs on Canada on EU and they all have tariffs on each other, this is 100% normal. The USA and Europe had tariffs on Japan from the 1960s until today, it is just part of global trade to defend your local workers and industry ,100% normal even for very very close allies.

No just normal relations. Canada and the USA have Tariffs on each other. and Also against the EU. Countries use Tariffs to balance their trade, very very normal

@arminius6506 I am not Canadian or American, but China has enough customers inside China 1.4 billion people that is a lot of EVs to sell, first China needs to sell cars to Chinese people and grow the local economy in wages so Chinese people can buy more EVs China is making a big big mistake always trying to export instead of boosting the local economy. China has 2 options, focus on Exports and become like Japan get stuck for 20 years with stagnation.... Not good for China... OR boost local demand, raise people wages, income has to go UP UP and UP so more Chinese can buy more EVs made in China. Yes that will make factories too expensive for the west so factories making goods for export will leave China to another country maybe India, but why should Chinese people be salves for foreign countries to make them cheap goods?? Why not make the goods for Chinese people? Raise the wages and Chinese people can buy more

Can get there without China easily but the issue is not the supply but demand. People in Canada like USA drive long distances, EV is not easy. I drive 500 miles each way to visit family so 1000 miles for 1 weekend, it would make my drive take too long. I leave home on Friday at 5pm, get to family at like 10pm and drive back on Sunday mid-day. Not going to work with EV but for commute to work every day EV is fantastic, cheap, less mechanical parts to repair, just great!

Well keep in mind that tariffs are just normal trade relations, China has tariffs on many countries as well, just normal trade relations. EU and USA have tariffs on each other. Canada and USA have tariffs, this is VERY normal.

@88500990 Not really, more competition if it is made in Canada then YES but not if it is imported. Keep in mind that Canada and USA have many many Tariffs against each other also Canada and USA have tariffs against EU, and Japan. So Tariffs are actually very VERY VERY normal part of trade relations. Even between the closest allies. SO this is not an issue. China and the west have have GREAT relations with tariffs it means nothing.

No not at all, countries always use Tariffs, The USA has tariffs on EU and Canada, and they have in return, most countries in the world use Tariffs to control trade, The USA has had large tariffs on Japan from the 1960s to today. As China rises to Advanced economy status , during the process the wages start low until they normalize so countries around the world will use tariffs to defend their local industry, this is 100% normal. Keep in mind Tariffs are normal they do not make countries enemies in fact they make them better friends as tariffs prevent issues

For sure that is possible it just takes time for new industry and technology to mature and sale numbers to rise for efficiency in production, you don't need to depend on other countries with lower wages just to get better prices that is tasking advantage of Chinese people if anything it is bad for China and unfair.
