We're about to assess embedded DB options for a backend service we're developing and duckdb sure sounds like it does all of the things that made sqlite look promising and much more!   24. This was a great talk. I really loved your ability to extract details out of the guest. I'm reading papers on distributed systems and this talk practically cleared a lot of doubts and reinforced the concept I learnt. I was able to draw the parallel of his point mentioning storage engine like levelDB with TigerbeetleDB and fsync failure as Joran talked on your podcast.

  26. That is by no means our primary motivation. We're just out here to build a fun game. MachineZone may have been after data mining, but having historical data is useful for customer service, time lapse videos, bug reproduction, economy balancing (notoriously tricky in MMOs), etc.

I just wonder if the tests could be slightly flaky when the data is so random - but maybe that's actually a benefit, and not a down-side? Overall though I'm impressed with property testing - I haven't seen it in practice like this before.

  42. Nice to hear rope become more and more well known. I recall an ICFP contest where the challenge problem needed to be done using rope or it was nearly impossible, but easy with rope. Rope wasn't well known enough and some folks complained at the gotcha.

  47. I'm very skeptical that this common subset approach can lead to a language that high-quality composable code can be written in. The fact that you have manual memory management and error handling through return values makes it sound a lot like C, a language which is notoriously difficult to compose safely. However, the idea of making things simpler to make them more maintainable is something I fully support.
