I’m an American who lived in Taiwan 2 years and was on Taiwan’s insurance. I love Taiwan and miss its wonderful insurance.

Good reminder to look to the future and not be too suckered into the flavor of the month, lol

Enjoy listening to your essays immensely, this will be a good one for sure. May I suggest looking into and making a video on ROCAF pilots that fought in Yemen? Thanks!

Fun fact: Sun Yat-Sen was exiled for a while in Macau and received inspiration from Portuguese Republicans and their October 5, 1910, revolution via the Macau local section of Portuguese republicans.

You're quickly becoming one of my favorite channels now!

I worked in Vaccine manufacturing and is habituated with cleanroom. Surprisingly, the ASML cleanrooms loosk surprisingly 'familiar' to me.

I think they pronounce it "TEMS" because that's how King George the First, who could not speak English well, pronounced it, and since what the King says it right, that how it's been pronounced since. In any event, this was a fascinating video. Thank you for posting it.

One video idea you could do is the history of the Taiwanese aborigines and how they lived before the island became majority Han. That'd be an interesting topic to explore.
17
Fantastic DD as always Asianometry, Super impressed with how much detail youve gone into here . Long $ASML!
17
I can't even watch the video right now because I have work tomorrow but I came here to say the same thing This man is a treasure I hope he is ok
17
Thanks for this vid, I wish it had been around when I first got to Taiwan. People tried to explain this concept and provide context to me, but with the language barrier, and the fact that I was too young and hot blooded to sit still and listen for too long, it was lost on me for a long time.
17
Always high point of the day when you post. Thank you so much
17
I also find stupid for a coffee company to be focused on caféine and not on taste, cakes, etc... . Energy drinks full of caffeine were born in Asia, and they conquered the world. Redbull story is kind of fascinating.
17
It's a great place for a run, almost like sun moon lake
17
I on the other hand wonder how YouTube and short video will continue to shape traditional shows. Age wise I might even be considered a gen X, but consistent YouTube watching made me absolutely allergic to padding. And this trend will only grow as younger generations keep preferring shorter and shorter videos

Great video Jon! I never heard of costal reservoirs and yet they seems to be quite widespread. My country, Italy, has mainly mountain reservoirs but it's very hard to scale this solution as you correctly pointed out. This year it was a mess and we are going to need some kind of solution for the future.

Very good. Drones seem to have huge potential in many areas. They seem much simpler than aircraft that need a crew. With non-military use, the technology is almost generic. The company history is fascinating, with great ideas coming out of left field but the development has taken decades. An idea before its time realised with new technologies.
17
I love your industrial policy videos, more of these please

I programmed and supported Unix/Linux systems professionally from 1980 until 2021...Of the dozens of Unix/Linux hardware/software varieties that I worked with, I liked Sun the best (extremely stable)...I like to say that "Solaris put my daughters through college" and in my personal Linux-based home lab, I use ZFS to manage my storage...The largest server type I ever configured myself, was a set of Sun E6900s (perhaps $800K in ~2005 dollars , 1,200 lbs per server).

I've recently been reading the very interesting book "Knowledge: How to Rebuild Civilization in the Aftermath of a Cataclysm" which talks about how to extract the basic chemical that power our world (like nitric acid and potassium) from boiling trees in a pot and distilling the steam. I love the topic so much. It's so "steampunk" and takes high school chemistry to the next level!
17
I really like that you always jump straight into the topic
17
Did you turn a profit? A lot of conventions I feel are just to get the organizers to turn a profit, and of course for the attendees to network, as it's often paid by their company, not their own pocket.
17
Why not do a series on the history of semiconductor chip fabrication machines? Very similar to this video but the history of each machine leading up to current processes.
17
I have been watching you since 2000 subscribers. Great video and look forward for next ones.
17
"The chip hipsters" is the phrase of the week. Thanks for the chuckle! :D

John , thank you for another brilliant video . Philips has a very interesting history indeed . A lot of people remember the old Sony Walkman but Philips was actually the developer of the cassette tape . Philips was also a major player with LG in flat screen tv technology. They had their fingers in every pie !
16
Yeah, narrator Dude needs to come out of the shadows and beat his chest. Knowledgeable narratives, with comprehensible analysis. Way beyond usual Net kibble.

4:55 It's probably worth doing a video on KT Li. He seems like a key politician in Taiwan's economic success. I'll go have a read of his Wikipedia page.
16
It’s 1:30 where I live and instead of sleeping, I am watching a video about a shoemaker in Taiwan. Strange world
16
Very good on the industrial ecology of luxury goods. One of my Australian friend's mid-30s son was working as a men's shoe designer for Louis Vuitton in Paris.
16
Great video! This was just what I was looking for. For anyone interested in further study of Sino-Japanese relations in the first half of the 20th century, I highly recommend Barbara W. Tuchman's Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece Stillwell And The American Experience In China. I promise you it will blow your mind. In fact, anything by Tuchman will always be the best book you've ever read. (No, I'm not Barbara Tuchman)
16
Hey Asianometry, great video! Can you do a video on Apple and its (so far very successful) transition to ARM and strict vertical integration? How can a company in 2022 become successfully vertically integrated, is this a temporary fad, and how is the industry moving ahead with regards to this?
16
After this grim summary I think I'll table my plans to enter the global milk market.
16
I was discussing this issue with some bitcoin miners just earlier today and I pointed them to your channel as they were sure high GPU prices would carry on for at least two years. Based on what I have seen on your channel I didn't buy it given the massive capital expenditure by TSMC in 2021. Your writing is so good and well informed on these complex topics melding geopolitics, technology and economics. Are you a trained journalist or journalism student?
16
Honestly, I've felt for quite some time that with some senior legacy-nodes coupled with some slick coding quite a few modern day things could take place (especially as some people start using dumb phones instead of smart ones). I hadn't assumed I was the first or foremost by a long shot, but it's nice to see it actually take place. 👍🏾 Another great video. 👌🏾
16
Just watched like 6 of your videos straight. I’m an analyst myself and this is real high quality content. Keep it up !
16
Only 10% cat?
16
More outstanding work jon. thank you.
16
Hello! What a very well put together video I’m very impressed. I currently work for trumpf on the co2 drive laser. Ive sent this video to the recruitment agency who hired me they always send applicants videos like this to prep before hand

My father John D Ishii was one of them . US Military Intelligence Then 25 years in the CIA during the Vietnam War. He was at camp Savage Mi
16
I actually live in Taiwan,so this is very interesting to me...
16
@puffman06 They will be Carbonlisted.
16
love your stuff! take it easy and hope you have a healthy & fulfilling next year.

The tsmc reference in the beef growing area 😂

Singapore 4th desalination plant :- New Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, which treats both sea and reservoir water. The plant can treat about 30 million gallons a day (mgd), or up to 7 per cent of Singapore's daily water needs of about 430mgd Guess all future desalination plants in Singapore will be able to process both sea and reservoir water at the same time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJu8uPlxK3Y

Very Very Interesting, as my wife is from Taiwan and her parents are from Zhejiang Province in China. Her parents went to Taiwan on their honeymoon in the 1950's, but were told not to go back to China as the situation was too unstable for them. Her father never returned to China, but if the truth is known, he would have had a better life in Taiwan.
15
Amazing detailed content! Keep going mate
15
Thanks for referring my video!

Really enjoy following along as you explore different topics going on in the tech world and beyond. Thanks!
