I live in the town where ASM International used to be before it collaborated with Philips to make ASML. Not sure what to make of it. Pretty cool I guess

Interesting video, thanks

Thanks man, I have learnt a lot from your channel. Keep up the good work. Thank you!

I’m just here for the New Zealand memes

I hope you had a great time on your trip! Thank you for the thoughtful insight.

I should also mention that ASUS RoG (Republic of Gamers) equipment including the ASUS "Strix" brand are also really great in my experience. Yes they have the over-the-top design of most gaming hardware (multicolored LED lights etc), but they have been great bang-for-buck every time I've researched their stuff. For smartphones my advice is currently "just buy the mid-range Samsung phone with the 5000+ mAh battery and a very high resolution screen) but for computing equipment the advice of "just buy ASUS/ROG and Gigabyte hardware" is actually pretty reasonable.

Your best video, among plenty of good ones, in my opinion. ^^ Thank you. I wonder, you sound American but are interested in Asia. Have you ever been to Asia or are you living there or are you of Asian descent? What piqued your interest in this region initially? And what are your main fields of expertise? Are you a historian or economist? :) PS: Sorry if I appear prying; I don't mean to. I am just very curious. One doesn't see an American well-versed in past and present across the ocean everyday. :)

First 2 minutes, i like the content and subscribed. informative

Ah, a video series coming out in the correct order.
8
Please make more videos on this topic. Thank you.
8
Another Great Video !! Thanks for producing them !!

My man loves brevity. Thanks to that, he's brought us the the quickest patreon shill on all of YouTube. 😂
8
Really spoiling us with all these recent uploads, and once again criminally low views on a channel that deserves far more!
8
I came to your channel for the TSMC content; I'm staying for all the other fascinating topics. Really neat video

I live across the river from Savage, Minnesota. I am a huge WW2 history buff, lived here most of my life, never knowing this all occured here. Sad how a lot of history gets lost. Thank you for covering this entire story.
8
Yes, smoking kills. Both my parents from terrible prolonged cancer.

Thank you very much for making very interesting and high quality video’s like this.
7
Nice surprise at this hour. Thank you
7
Very informative video, learned a lot from this 👍
7
I’m always impressed about how informed you are about our products.

Great video, Jon! Many thanks for your hours of great educational entertainment ❤️

Damn I wish this had come out 7 hours earlier, I was just finishing up a rushed research paper on the semiconductor shortage and would've loved to include more information on Fab construction but finding comprehensive sources was difficult. Speaking of which, have you ever considered throwing sources in the description? Your other videos were super helpful but I often found myself wanting to cite a specific detail but being unable to track down a print source (I cited your channel as a reference, but for individual claims in-text citing Youtube videos is generally frowned upon sadly).
7
This is the kind of hard hitting videos I appreciate. Really makes you think 🤔
7
I'm an adult but I still love field trips. Thanks for the taking us with you.
7
Well one thing I can predict about the future from when he created this video is: That he got his 100,000+ subscribers
7
Another super informative video, so many thanks! Also it's so cool to see just how complex an everyday object like a sports shoe is, like I would have never though about it until you broke down just how many "components" are required in the "assembly" ;^)
7
Superb video as always. Excellent summation in easy to understand terms. Folks, share this far and wide. It’s too good not to!
7
I really enjoy your videos, Jon. This video essay is a great take on the semiconductor design problem. I do believe that AI will gradually step in to help alleviate some of the challenges and issues with manufacturing silicon but the industry has been slow to adopt this technology to make vast improvements to silicon manufacturing quality. Some in technology thing "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and that needs to change in my opinion.

Hong Kong during the 60s was also a time when corruption was rampant in all civil and government levels especially the police. The police were more concerned getting their weekly kickbacks (the weekly kickbacks were structured based on rank) than concerned about the uprising and social instability that was about to boil over. By the way, I really appreciate your channel in youtube, keep up the great work and looking forward to all your upcoming episodes.
7
I really enjoy how you have new areas of technology to explore and it's not about the software
7
Excellent video once again. Thank you for sharing.
7
underrated channel

I agree with you, indeed 2023 is passed away swiftly and it is valid question where did the time go? Well, let's not ponder over that now and move on. Asianometry is a gem among other youtube channels, and watching your videos on varied topics is a productive investment of time for me. I really wish Asianometry to continue in coming years and, Thankyou for your sincere efforts you put behind this channel. Best wishes and Regards for 2024 and future. -Aeyo from 🇮🇳

The concept of standard cells still live on, but today there is so much software aid on the hard design that the finished product is a far cry from the Lego like approach of VLSI. And today the concept has moved to IP blocks. That is basically the same approach done differently: keep complexity down by segmenting out functionality blocks, but keep things flexible with standard interfaces for those blocks.
7
Seriously: THANK YOU ! I really like your channel, but this video sent me back to the early 90s when I programmed my first GAL units while my teachers were teaching us TTL/CMOS... they were already late!
7
AHAHAH THIS IS THE LAST VIDEO I EXPECTED TO SEE A MGS MEME! "YOU'RE PRETTY GOOOOOD:)"
7
How fitting, a deer fawning over being appreciated. Love your content, in depth no nonsense videos about semi-obscure topics and topics that everyone wonders about but nobody consciously asks questions about. What Discovery or Nat Geo used to give in 60m with commercials in the late 90s early 00s. To a great new year and many more insightful videos!

@Asianometry ok so it is not overly dependant on apple. It wouldn't be great for the company but also for the business model. As a customer if I have to go to a company that might have to prioritize my main competitors need instead of me it would be a real concern.
7
I get it the whole world depends on Taiwan 🇹🇼 the great nation.
7
Well made video my fellow taiwanese

One reason you can't really compare the productivity of research in terms of number of patents is that for bigtech companies like apple, alphabet etc. a lot of research probably goes towards software solutions which can't be patented. Whereas for tsmc i think its more patentable types of engineering so to say.

5:15 did you say he lost to a Korean fish? I know I misheard that. But that is hilarious.
7
hello They seem to be pretty well thought out " random thoughts" m
7
I can't understand why I haven't stumbled into this channel before, but now I'm gonna watch all of it. Thank you for making awesome videos!
7
Great video. I know Japan, Europe and South Korea have work cultures that prize joining safe/large/established companies immediately after entering the workforce, with major societal pressure (seen as a failure) if you choose to pursue life paths with less guaranteed success. I presume Taiwanese youth have a similar outlook.
7
Have you seen the film 一念無明? I would be interested to hear if you have any recommendations for other Chinese media references which look at mental health. I plan to watch 疯爱 by 王兵 soon.
7
Great video! Possible to also do a video on Canon and nikon Lithography machines vs those by ASML? Tia
7
Good video. Thank you for your contribution.

National Cheng Kung university is one of the top 4 universities(台成清交) in Taiwan, known for science and tech education. Also one of the early 3 technical higher education institutions established in the colonial period.
