If our media outlets weren't so subject to political, financial and Establishment influence and so into 'popular' entertainment etc, we might have had proper coverage of the whys and whats of leaving the EU.   24. I was doing my best, like all good republicans, to avoid at all costs any coverage of the coronation today and then stumbled on your video which seemed the perfect antidote. What a pleasant surprise to find such a thoughtful, insightful and respectful conversation that removed some of the mystery for me about what makes King Charles tick. I find myself coming away liking and respecting some of the values of the man, if not the institution. Whilst King Charles' conception of "Nature" as static might be flawed, his battle against some of the destructive forces in our world is much needed and appreciated by many. I can't help thinking that it's a tragedy that his entrapment in the royal ivory tower of privelege is the very thing that's isolated him from the people that might otherwise have been able to join forces with him.

  86. The notion of repeating a vote being antidemocratic is a strange feature of British political discourse. Over here in California we revisit issues on ballot initiatives all the time. Sometimes majority opinion changes. We deal with that over here by scheduling ballot initiative elections, by imposing requirements for issues to get onto the ballot, by requiring supermajorities in some issues, and by subjecting ballot initiatives to judicial review.

  117. Not being able to make any virgin steel in the UK is a massive own goal. Its a strategic critical resource. Recycled steel from arc furnaces cannot be made into the same high quality steel, so we will now be reliant on imports. People want a greener economy, but also want no drop in standard of living. You can't have both. Fossil fuels are a super power, and we've both squandered and misused them to have a two century long party.

I also get a huge amount of training where I work (fortunate 100 corporation) related to inclusion, discrimination, unconscious bias, and the benefits of views from a range of background rather than just those like us.   144. Tata Steel's energy program doesn't challenge Labour's Net Zero Policy. Tata is a private firm operating all over the world. Conservative governments have changed UK Steel so that the plants are not competing for business all over the world. Tata decides which of its many plants will do the work. If it is easier to supply the EU from an India based plant they will do that. Labour and Labour policy not involved. PM Sunak mentioned how grateful the workers should be as Tata wanted to fire more people. If Labour are looking for industries that the UK needs post Brexit, they should look at steel demand in the UK and determine if they want to create a UK owned Steel company. Because the Conservatives have badly damaged the economy, other industries will need similar consideration. Excellent video as always by The New Statesman. Hope Labour makes Anoosh the next Speaker.

  158. Really interesting interview. One question has not been addressed, though: How would or should King Charles react to unconstitutional moves by HM government? We know for sure that Liz Truss predecessor engaged in such behaviour (when proroguing parliament). In Austria and Germany, presidents have a mostly ceremonial role, but if they believe that the government or parliament have violated the constitution, they can refuse to comply and call for the courts to resolve the situation.

  161. Great report. The property market has had hot air blown into it for years. Front page “House prices to increase x this years. The Vested Interests Nationwide, RICS etc who release their monthly data to the media. Asking them to report honestly on the state of property market is like asking turkeys to vote for Christmas. For those think, “oh those Tories” I would like to point out that the practice of pumping money into the economy via turning houses into cash machines was practiced to the fully by Gordon Brown whilst Labour were in power and he chancellor. People really need to open their eyes and take the sugar coated spoon out their mouths and actually think for a moment whether house prices rising disproportionately against wages is actually a good idea for the nation. Meanwhile the VI will point to low interest rates over the last 10-15 years and crow that people can afford to borrow more so house prices are ok to inflate at a rate significantly higher than age growth. It’s an utter con.

This is a very credible view by Marr, it really makes sense: the radical Conservative Brexiters who want extreme disruption vs the nostalgic more numerous Conservative brexiters who wanted a gentler Brexit which has led to a deep rupture inside the Conservative party and alienated a significant number among Conservative voters.

  230. Another great podcast! I have been listening to the New Statesman podcasts for the last 6+ months and I really enjoy the content. I can see you are trying to offer a balanced view and even praise conservative politics when they do something well. In this polarised world, it is very refreshing. I can even see progression in the quality of the studio, presentation and confidence. Thanks for the hard work! Quick question though (and apologies if you have already answered this), it strikes me that conservative and right wing media is very good at towing the party line even when it is not in the best interest of the general public. However, left wing, liberal media seems much more open to self criticism. Do you ever feel worried that you may contribute to political defeat because of this?

  239. Midway through this. He's quite charming, affable and seems at least willing to try and explain and apologise for his actions. However, two things stick out. His line about more people being put into good and outstanding hospitals is completely undercut by his immediately revealing that these had not be measured before this. And that old chestnut of 'biggest financial crash, need to make cuts etc. etc.' which has been proven, repeatedly, to be economically illiterate. His government's ideological commitment to selling off the state and cutting back crucial services, has been more damaging to us than what Thatcher did 40 years ago. It completely undermines anything he says beforehand. Otherwise, it's typically an excellent interview by Anoosh who asks pertinent and quite digging questions, without resorting to the rudeness that I think would put off most MPs. Great video.

As to the climate catastrophe, my money is on cooling as we head into the grand solar minimum. Believe no climate predictions, mine included. Cold is more dangerous than warm.

I think your analysis of the debate is missing something here, Kier Starmer let Sunak build his arguments and claims of legitimacy on Tax upon the argument that Labour would increase Tax by 2k per person, and that has been proven objectively false by the facts. If the Labour party had presented those facts then they could have been portrayed as making a subjective political claim. The letter being made public the next day is no coincidence, and all the newspapers that repeated the claim can turn on Sunak (and indeed have to) in order to maintain the trust of their readership. Ultimately, Starmer laid a trap and an elegant solution for the right wing elements of the press that he wants to support him, without opening himself up to potential allegations of subjectivity.

Just a thought, but would the Sue Grey report make any difference , The "Shock and Awe" of Party gate has gone I think, (if we ever see it ,it will be abridged to fit the current situation) I suspect The Tory "Brand" has been damaged, but not irreparably, if we remember John Majors term in office the Sleaze was rampant, yet they managed to return. My Instincts are Johnson will bluff it out till the election at least, Johnson is the "Brexit " era and will be mainly remembered for that and that alone. I would even go so far as to say that with no clear and outright "Personality " at the helm and the shambles of Brexit making inroads to the country's economy and people's pockets they might be happy to lose in the next election , and let Labour sort out the Mess, then return as the "party to sort out the mess that Labour made". What will happen is Johnson will not lead that campaign, somewhere he will be persuaded to go for Party unity, ill health, etc. Covid, the war in Ukraine (please, please let it be) are short term events, Brexit is long term and far more insidious and corrosive.

  299. If the PM won’t even discuss it with the democratically elected leader of the Welsh Assembly, then what hope do we have to get a plan for the future. Subsidies or keeping the furnaces open may not be an option, but there needs to be an agreed plan for jobs in the Port Talbot area.

  325. First time viewing your broadcast, I really enjoyed the moderate tone thank you. As to the ‘ Starmer no drama’ observations. I think you are right. The current Labour Party may not be the answer to our restructuring, socially or economically but we need a line in the sand. A new datum line from which to take our measurements. The erratic variables and extremes that are conveyed to us in screams shouts and demented rants on a daily basis by our current government are proof we just need an anchor. We need someone in midfield to put their foot on the ball and look up, take a little time and consider the next pass. To use another football analogy, as a country we can now be best considered in terms of the 1970s football chant of “nobody likes us and we don’t care” So we now have an opposition leader acting like our premier, he is in general terms non contentious, upsets very few people or nations. That can be interpreted in many ways, weak devious dishonest, there was a time when it would have been considered diplomatic, now there’s a skill we could use in government right now. Boring? No drama? Or just a Steady Eddy. Move over egos and enter ‘no drama Starmer’ or should that be ‘ No fear Kier’? Thank you for the platform for me to air my moderate rant

  330. Everyone is making what they want of this story, whether Brexit or anti-green policies. This is really sad for the people who live and work there, but I think you got to the main point right at the end of the video - this is a story of industrial modernisation, investment and automation when it comes down to it, a story which has always involved less and less workers over time. The problem is that these skilled workers will no doubt be left on the metaphorical "trash heap" and end up in low skilled, low paid service sector jobs. Additionally, as said at the end of the video - look at the work of the resolution foundation - the green transition will have a negligible effect on the number of jobs, and countries don't change their industrial structure overnight. We are a post industrial country - we should focus on conditions for people who work in the service sector, not trying to rebuild manufacturing, in the short term at least.

Boris is just spawning "off the cuff" policies, which have to be u-turned because they haven't been thought through, and are abhorrent to their own back benchers never mind the public. Labour and Lib Dems will do well as will SNP in Scotland. This will be a warning which he would do well to listen to.

  338. Andrew, I strongly agree with your views here. One area which I think our society should actively push against is religious dogmatism of all faiths. It is frankly absurd that in a modern society religion is given any credence. People can maintain their community organisations without a belief in a god. All religion does is segment society and the sooner we reach the level of enlightenment where all faiths are shown to be false constructs the better. At this point it is just another tool to divide us, causing friction based on texts which no rational person should place any trust in.

To be honest, I was rather disappointed when Anousha (spelling?) stopped being the main presenter of TNS videos and Hannah took over but I guess it was just a dislike of change, now I can't imagine anyone else hosting these (but I do hope to see Anousha again now and then) :) Incidentally, isn't it probable that the turn-out was so low because many traditional Tory voters couldn't bring themselves to vote Tory? As far as Labour is concerned, this was probably a good thing.

( empire days) Take away the financial industry and the UK is a relatively poor country. The UK needs to align with one of the 3 largest economies.   394. It is interesting to note that the two comparison countries have proportional representation. When corruption takes hold, a minor party can pull the rug from under a collation government. The English electorate is too blinkered by ancient glories to see that corruption and first pas the post voting go hand in glove.
