  3. I'm a furniture remover, bottom of the market, sole trader. Within 2 weeks, of the Truss/Kwarteng budget everything just stopped! The Country had already been hammered by the cost of energy, markedly reducing business, then that budget was like the final straw! There is loads of money floating around at the top of the market, but the bottom is just flat! 25% of my business used to be moving renters but that all but dried-up with the pandemic - renting is so expensive that they're renting their own truck and doing their own moves. The market is a mess! I recently moved a young couple into a 1 bedroom flat in Bristol. Both were working but they had to pay a years rent in advance, £13,000! The real kicker was it was the ground floor of an ex-council house! The first floor was another flat and the loft had been converted into another flat! To top all off, the Chairman of Natwest, Sir Howard Davies, thinks that it's not difficult to buy a home!!!!! The people at the top are literally clueless and the very worst people to be in the positions they are in!!!! We are stuffed and I am scared!

  9. Why are taxes so high... on the poor. And not nearly high enough on the rich. The trouble is, we all know why, we know it in our bones. We don't know the fancy terminology for it, but we know the country is run by and for a vanishingly small minority of people seeking to expand their own money and power at quite literally, the cost of our wellbeing and the planet itself. Trouble is, that the vanishingly small minority have convinced juuuuust enough of the riff-raff, that they might one day, make it, to prevent change. They won't. And none of us will, without solidarity and collective action.

  13. Your best video yet! In my 60s and comfortably retired, I tell everyone I meet to listen to your stuff. I think emphasising the post war reckoning is really where we need to be. So many younger people have only ever experienced the learned helplessness, the imagined impotence of the ordinary working people. We need to reignite the spirit of power that comes with solidarity, collective action, community.

  14. Hey Gary. I'm a college student in America. Earlier this year I had to write a 10 page essay for school on the book 1984. I ended up writing about the economic inequality in America. This was the first time I became passionate about something school related. I learned about everything you're talking about; being from America our inequality is even worse. I became so enthralled over the severity of the situation and the fact that I had never really been aware of how bad it was. I was born in one of Africa's poorest countries, Ethiopia, but was adopted into a wealthy American family. All of this accumulated in my decision to study economics at university. I ended up dropping my economics class because of what you describe; it was all graphs and maths and had nothing to do with the actual economy. I'm now pursuing political science in the hope that I can learn enough about the political and economic systems of the world to change it. I want to fight; hopefully and maybe someday I could help you in this goal.

I’m an economist and doing my masters currently, and after watching your videos and doing my own reading after, I realised just how flawed the field really is, with lots of gaps in knowledge that seem common sense. The field of economics seems to be trying to be a science/maths based subject when it simply is not. I presented the information from your videos Gary and my own added info to my professor and he didn’t argue back but simply said it was right, which only confirmed the large wealth inequality issue for me. Keep up the good work, you’re fighting the good fight and the impact you’re having is greater than you realise.

  19. As a mum, I feel that Gary can be a really positive counterbalance to people like Andrew Tate. Working class boys can see that the cards are stacked against them and that no one wants to talk about that. Gary gives another narrative. I have dealt with these powerful cretins in my youth much in the way of being on the receiving end of Trump's real estate "transactions". I used to design and construct stained glass windows for a big Beverly Hills developer's homes, initially believing all the praise heaped on my work. Only to let my guard down, and being denied payment at the end of a job. Gary's 100% right. The rich and powerful will lie as easily as they breathe. The working class and poor must join together, otherwise we and our planet won't be around much longer.

  25. Immediately sent this to my mum, who is an immigrant working in the UK as a social worker. Everything you touch on here speaks directly to her daily anxieties about the subtle (and otherwise) resentment she experiences for legally immigrating to a country where people are being told that immigrants are the problem, and yet immigrant labour props up the economies of all the major Western powers. A great reminder of the fallacy of the rich is that ELON MUSK IS AN IMMIGRANT. He is not a native born American, no matter how hard he tries to hide this fact. The reality is as long as people hold on to the dangerous belief that they're going to become the 1%, the rich will fleece the poor until there is no real society left.

  28. Tax the rich. I saw this reel that was someone asking a random 20 something girl in the street what she thinks needs to be done about the economy and she said tax the rich, even just 2%. Then the video broke down what that 2% could pay for. In the comments, it blew my mind, people were up in arms saying 'why should they be taxed 2%, they've worked for it they deserve it.' And this is what we're really up against, normal people being so enamoured by the lie that they too may one day be mega rich that they take it as a personal attack when in reality they're actually getting materially poorer but supporting this delusion.

  35. Hi Gary. I come from Newham and grew up in dirt poor. Saved by the welfare state, we got a council house when we were flooded out of our private rented flat - long story. My dad had ambitions for me to be a teacher or a nurse; the highest ambition for a girl in the 1970s! I found it really hard to leave friends behind and baulked against it but I buckled down and became a teacher. I found I had a small talent for the work and a big burning desire to give kids opportunity and rich experiences. I was a headteacher in Newham and Redbridge for 25 years, a teacher for 39 years. Thank you for what you’re doing. The days of kids like me being saved by free uni and council housing has gone. We have the fight of our lives ahead as society begins to collapse. The only way forward is radical transformation for the greater good.

  36. Oh Gary this was magnificent. I am 80 now and have known relative poverty for most of my life. But for some reason I never really looked for more. Maths was never my thing, more of an artist, writer, poet, so maybe that's why. You have a brilliant mind, and more than that, a big heart. You care. and that's what is important at times like this, at any time really. The Buddhist concept of "Be Kind" needs to be spread far and wide for, as your Japanese friend said, the rich people have small hearts. Even though you had money, you were not comfortable with it, and that says everything about you. I wish you every success in all you do because you deserve it, though I know that doesn't always follow. Thank you so much for what are doing. I'm crying now as I write this just because your words move me so much. Know that some of us at least, really appreciate you, maybe more than you know.

  37. I've always had the itching thought when people talk about house prices going up = good that is: if you only own one house, why are you happy the price is going up? Unless you own 3, 4, 5+ houses you won't ever see the return on the investment as it's not really an investment, it's the place you live! If you bought it for 80k and it's worth 400k now who cares, you still only own one property and you'll always need somewhere to live!

  39. Have you ever been to Treasury, Gary? I’ve been watching you a lot and heard what you’ve said about the out of touch privately educated rich kids in the banks, who have no idea how our economy is actually doing. I’m an economist in the civil service and my experience of Treasury is exactly the same. You don’t find it so much in other departments but Treasury is rammed full of these privately educated rich kids with no clue. Paradoxically, I think it’s because pay in Treasury is so low. The best don’t go there because they can’t afford to, yet it’s such a prestigious job. So it attracts a certain type of power hungry person with enough family money behind them to support them. I walk through the offices and the canteen and everyone is wearing their Saville Row suits and talking about their skiing holidays. It’s night and day with the real world! It makes me wonder how we’re supposed to make change when those working for the most important department in the country, advising the government on our economy and our future, are so out of touch.

  40. I was born into a working class family (although I think the term is designed to mentally limit your aspirations) and I now own my home. I am nearly sixty and I remember from the late 70s onward. Currently because of energy prices we have switched off the hot water and we ration the radiators. I haven't had a holiday for five years anywhere. My van is second hand, we ration food and our standard of living will fall another 12% over the next two years. I agree with everything you say but we need to emphasise that our current conditions are a political choice. The future can be radically different but people need to get behind this. Next weekend the nation will be celebrating the coronation which will cost them in excess of 100 million and is a party for the wealthy elite. Will the people of this country ever stop and truly think of a different more equitable future or will they go on being a willing participant in their own poverty. Political change is needed and that begins with education. Thank you for all you do.

If something is only sold to and between the wealthy, what the average consumer can afford becomes a non-factor.

  46. I came to this video after our first home purchase fell through due to the seller backing out to rent the property instead. After searching for a year and a half I’ve realised there is nothing out there that I can afford and my financial state and career has left me in despair. This video made me feel more depressed but it was the slap in the face with reality that I needed. By you saying that my lack of success is not a measure of my intelligence or my work ethic did Improve my self esteem for which I am thankful for.   49. That statement hits home, you need to protect your resources. The resources of this country are the people who keep this country going day in and day out. The cost if living for the average person has been stolen and we the resources are at the mercy of the super rich who have found ways to hit us in the pockets. The government need their resources back and that will only happen when they make UK liveable for the people at the expense of the rich. I believe only then will see truth growth in the UK.
