I’m going to Japan in seven weeks. Very excited. We’ll be staying in the Tokyo area, but I’ve kind of started to plan another trip for 2026 where I plan to travel around a bit more.

Indeed, this is a wonderful custom of Japan. Humans exist… they pass away. We too grow old. By doing so, we progress in understanding… hopefully? Once a year is not enough, but everyday being thankful as a ritual …

If everything works out as planned I'll visit Japan again in May 2025 (after golden week) but I'll avoid Tokyo, Kyoto, etc.. My plan so far is to rent a motorcycle and visit some rather "tourist-less" areas 🤔

Something that surprised me the most was how long I could walk without passing a bench. I’d been prepared for the lack of trash cans and recognized quickly to be mindful not to block people walking behind me, but this one caught me unprepared. I’d walk laps and laps around a mall or go blocks down the street looking for a place to sit down to send a text message or tie my shoe or or whatever.

Mistake 1: Staying in Shibuya. What a shame… spent a fortune there to see trash, drunk tourists incl. drunk Japanese, was terrible. The temple was beautiful and some great shopping areas and Hachikō was adorable 🥰 but I wish I’d taken a 1 day trip there and not stay 2 nights.

I'm researching for a trip late in 2025. Nao my dear, this is the most useful channel I have found so far. Thank you! Oh, and any tips on how to make the most of the Setouchi Art Festival would be most welcome.

warm water is very good at helping with congestion. thanks for sharing!!

I agree... because of the demand in today's society and lifestyle, people are unknowingly cancelling tradition. I remember the song, "Tradition", in The Fiddler on the Roof.

❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank you. 🇬🇧

I am so relieved you did NOT say you would no longer make videos! I enjoy your content so much! Many of your videos offer unique perspective, and your choices for content are interesting. I have an interest in Japan and its culture. I visited Japan in 2023, and hope to return in 2025. Blessings!

@dgillies5420 That was rather rude. Perhaps you can enlighten everyone about where they are supposed to install this fibreglass insulation given there are no cavity walls and no loft space.

I like this. They will be tougher people for this.

Good video. I will follow.

The tip to bring cash is really a good one. Will remember that. Thanks!

I had similar experiences when visiting Bulgaria in south-eastern Europe a few years back. I am Norwegian, I do not speak much Bulgarian except the few phrases I managed to learn while preparing for the trip. Nobody there spoke my Norwegian language, but the surprising part was that almost much everybody under 30 years old understood English. They just didn't want to speak it. So I had no problems communicating, I just had to combine a few languages and get used to pointing a lot. :)

All these foods sound delicious and warming. I'm going to try some hot pot!

Seeing the title, I thought this was going to be about the expected mega earthquake. "Visit Japan while it's still there" -kind of thing.

Of course there’s a fake monk here as well. They have those in New York and pretty much all big cities. Thank you for the tips though! 😁

Thanks a lot for all the tips. I loved this video

Japan is in a heat wave right now. My friend in Tokyo got heatstroke. Rain would be good right now.

Nao 👋 my intercultural skills are increasing day by day! 😊Thanks

I recently come from Japan as a solo traveler first timer and I'm already making plans to go there next year again. These videos help out a lot to apply for my next trip. Thanks for your content!

Hi Nao. Keep up the great work! Always looking forward to your videos. ☺️

The overtrourism thing is still funny to me somehow, because if you just compare the numbers between for example Paris and Tokyo, Tokyo cannot compete and the Japanese government actually wants to push tourism up to 60 mil next year. The main issue however being that there is is not enough preparation done for it. Tourism needs a different form of infrastructure and accessibility that outside of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto isn’t provided. Plus Tokyo is already experiencing the so called „Paris effect“ in which locals start seeing tourists as a homogeneous group and are annoyed by it. However in Japan you will definitely very rarely see an upfront rude waiter or sales person like in Paris.

Depending where you're staying, a bus may be a better option than a train for getting to your hotel. There are buses that go from Haneda to many of the popular areas (and even some individual hotels) directly.

Look, I'm 6'8", I make Japanese people uncomfortable by coming in the room. I lived in Okinawa for 2 years and had many friends.

すみません 👋Hi Nao, would you like to help me with my Japanese homework? I gonna call it my first trip to Japan! 🫣I would not accept a friendly, nice person to take pic. I will avoid the rush hours but food 🤔 😢 I gonna ask for a guide in a hotel, is it possible? Which part of the city do you recommend to stay in? Safe and easy to go to the places? PS : My English is getting better and better🙄 ignore my personalized mistakes 🤗Big hug appreciate your help.

I remember even 8-9 years ago, when I first started traveling to Japan, I would tell someone I was going and their reaction would be something like "Why Japan?? It's just a bunch of modern buildings, seems boring. Why not Europe instead?" Now of course, a lot of those people have changed their mind and are in a rush to get to Japan lol I guess the rise of Japanese culture in the west in the late 2010s and 2020s has lead to Japan being seen as a top destination now where as before it would be overlooked.

Now I really understand. I have been living in Nagoya for over 3 years now and I still have hard time getting through the winter. It is just so cold inside the house!!! Thanks for the informative video.

I'm hoping to save up enough money to be able to come to Japan someday. It's on my bucket list. Wish me luck! 🙏🤞☘️🍀🌸

@JapanwithNao While shopping for a suitcase in a Kyoto department store in 2003, I put my less than one week old digital camera down on a shelf in the suitcase area to move and try out out some of the displays. My friend and I bought a couple of suitcases to transport our extra scuba gear down to Okinawa for holidays and we were pretty much in a rush leaving the mall when putting on our seat belts in the mall parking lot I realise I don't have the digital camera with me. Ugh, suddenly the mood was down because it had been over 45 minutes since I put the camera down and I figured, oh well but I walked all the way back to the suitcase area which was nearly a ten minute walk, BIG mall. I walked right to the shelf where I remember putting the camera down and it was still there. Then I felt kind of weird just picking up the camera and walking away with it because how would other people know it was mine? 😅

Very useful and informational video, thank you for sharing!

ありがとうございます😊 Ive planned mid to end of March, and most days are in Tokyo. Sadly I cant seem to get anyone to go with me so I will be traveling solo. Any tips for solo travelers in Tokyo? 😂 Tokyo seems like its more of a city you enjoy with other people so I am worried... I was in Osaka last year and did tour groups but its a hit or miss with the kind of people in the group.

I went to Matsue on my third Trip, realy nice (and cheap) region, but even the locals in Tokyo later asked me why I got so far away from "everywhere". 🤡
4
I visited Yonaguni Island this year. I was the only foreigner there (or at least the only non Asian). Tokyo and Kyoto were too full of tourists.
4
I’m traveling to Tokyo in March. I have lots of tattoos on my arms hands and legs. I recently watched a video saying if you have tattoos they will not let you into bars/ clubs. The club warp looks so amazingly fun so I hope this isn’t the case! Great video

omg…PLEASE DONT BLOCK THE WAY! Don’t stop in the middle of the way for any reason, go to the side and then stop. Its literally dangerous

So the last time i went to japan was in july of 2018 an it was so hot and humid but it only rained on the last few days we were there. We also just got our tickets to go to june so i wonder how different its going to be. Im assuming a lot more rain but honestly i just hope it wont be as hot as the last time we went

I wouldn't trust the "five days in Tokyo is enough" -advice. I spent 13 days in Tokyo, and there are still lots of places I wanted to go to but didn't have the time. Of course, I had company, so I couldn't just go to where I wanted when I wanted, compromises had to be made, but even if I did, I would've probably missed something. I believe that, depending on one's interests of course, one could spend a month or even longer in Tokyo and still find new things they want to see.

Unspoken Rule #67: If you are a woman over a certain age, let's say 25-28 yrs old, then wear calf-length skirts or pants as opposed to shorts that do not cover your knees. If you wear shorts, other women of that age and older will give you mildly critical looks. If you cover your legs, the middle aged ladies will often smile in a friendly way as they pass you by. It's probably not such a big deal, but in Europe, it is common for middle aged women to wear thigh length baggy shorts in summer to keep cool, but it seems that this is not the social norm in Japan.

Sad but many Asian countries are loosing their cultures/traditions due to westernization, not just Japan. Some indigenous languages /cultures/civilizations were even wiped out or almost extinct.

I think it's fine to pay the fee for the guy that took the picture without prior agreement that he was doing a job, I can always dirt of his shoulder for to remove some of the smutchs he had there for twice the amount of whatever he's charging me.
