I'm from northern Norway and I recently found out I have a great grandfather who was Kven (finnish norwegian). So I have a decent percentage Uralic in me :)
9
Somerled was one of my great grandfathers. The founder of Nova Scotia was too.
9
I'm Dutch and I have grey eyes. I used to think they were boring, like wet cement, so when I found out it's actually quite rare it was really nice :D (the sensitive to light thing is definitely true. damn you, cars with too-bright headlights!!)
9
I’m blonde and blue eyed . I think it goes in with my O negative blood type and the ancestors that past these traits to me.

The Romans had enough problems with the southern Britons and used the 'client King' model to generally exert some kind of soft power influence over the island, with the Caledonian confederation having to be beaten down every generation or so to 'refresh' this arrangement. I don't think they wanted or needed to go near Ireland and the 'colony' near Dublin may not have even been Roman at all, but perhaps an outpost of one of the autonomous British Kingdoms. We know from recorded names of the peoples of Ireland that there were identically named groups in both Britain and Ireland, and trade and political relationships between the two kin-groups would be expected. Interesting though, we see the rise of the Irish pirates when both the Roman presence and strong British Kingdoms begin to fail, suggesting that the Irish had been 'policed' or 'kept in line' up until then.

Such an interesting video! Combines culture, anthropology & migration. Well researched!! My haplogroup is H10e. I’ve had DNA testing to identify relatives. What a wonderful way to look at the rest of humanity. Have met many “DNA cousins”. I knew a lot of my ancestry before DNA testing. My dad’s background (R1 b) was Irish, Scots-Irish. My mom was German-Dutch. (My parents & their parents were born in US.) Also, some Scandi & SW Asian (first farmers) One company was able to assign my DNA as 46% first agriculturalists, 44% Hunter-gatherers & 10% iron -age people. Each one of us is such a blend of all those who came before!

And eye colours can alter somewhat depending of the ambient lighting so how can that be a strong selection factor.
9
what a great video mate thank you

Another master piece. Better then any thing that's on TV. Many of these surnames mentioned are extremely common on Tyneside and the Northeast. Brilliant video, sharing it with family, and my best mate John Armstrong. 😉
9
Thank you for this video as it was very informative. I took an ancestry test some time ago and have come to know after long and continuous research, I have a lot of family ancestors from Galicia. I hope to visit soon and finally meet Galicians!
9
Is there any connection between the Scythians and the Huns and the mongols?
9
A Forsyth clan descendant here. Love the history of the clans all the way from the picts to present day! Great content.

Had to be a night attack as recorded by the Roman sources as opposed to a day victory (which is more likely, imo). Could not have a standing legion lose a battle to a scruffy bunch of barbarians in a (for the Caledonians desperate, homes, families) pitch battle, especially when the writers family is involved. In most cases cavalry doesn't really handle very well over a battlefield in an area you don't know...at night.

I am algerian, 16% sardinian

I have one blue and one green eye. Both my parents had blue eyes, as do all my siblings and nieces and nephews.
9
The last land bridge between Britain and Ireland was between Pembrokeshire, West Wales, and the Wexford area, South-East Ireland, which these days is now known, drowned, as St. George's Channel. It finally drowned about 7000BC with the rising post-glacial sea levels. Memory of was carried to fairly recent times.
9
I have hazel eyes. They're typically mostly brown but when I'm emotional, tired, or in higher elevation, the green becomes more apparent. My mom has wintergreen (blueish green) eyes and my dad has brown.
9
After the WWll. One of my mum's sisters married into the MacKenzie Clan. Based around Loch Carron (Kyle of Loch Alsh). That Scottish marriage became my God parents. I remember Uncle Jim as a very quietly spoken man. His accent too was rather quiet.
9
I'd've never guessed you were 6'3" without you saying

I love redhead women

Good little vid, compressing a potentially massive list of subjects into something manageable. Gaul wasn't just conquered by Caesar but destroyed by him. I think its in his own writings that he brags that he killed 1/3 of the population and enslaved another 1/3, the survivors were likely hit with famines. Even by Roman standards the destruction of Gaul was outrageous and was motivated solely by Caesar wanting to set himself up as a Warlord. The Roman Republic up until then had actually been rather reluctant to fight and most of her territory had been gained defensively by being attacked by older more dominant powers like Carthage, Epirus and Macedonia. The invasion of Gaul was really Rome's first 'Imperialist' war.
9
England got Danish vikings. Scotland & ireland got Norwegian vikings.
9
Same. What it means? So we're shape shifting or something 😅😅
9
Isle of Sky(Saka). Either the Scythians came from Scotland, or they moved there. No doubt.
9
Our ancestors from the island must have been fierce. The ancient enemies built not one but two separate walls to keep them out.
9
Now this is an epic!

In Italy there are a lot of people with gray eyes with all the variations from light to dark and for example I have Bluish Grays and they always confuse me between the 2 or even every now then in the heat it happens that they lighten temporarily and look light green lol . In my family the dominant color is Blue but my 2 grandmothers have gray eyes and I inherited the Grey/Blue color from my father side, while from my mother side had my maternal grandmother has light gray eyes and other my relatives also inherited the gray having the blue has dominant, like my cousin who always inherited the blue gray from her father's side and my aunt from my mother's side has stone gray with a bit of amber as a halo

I’m an American but my mother’s father was from Sweden. My dad’s family was from Scotland but my Y dna is I1a - Viking.

Hi. My surname is Keena /McKeena from Westmeath, Ireland. I did a Y dna test and this linked me to the Mcdonald clan. This suggests that my name may be an anglicised version of Mac Iain Abrach. I think that we may have arrived in Ireland as redshanks in mid 1500s.
9
Calm down mate 😅
9
My Scottish ancestors come from the Isle of Jura / Argyll as far back as I can find. The family name I fall under is "Buie". As far as I am able to find, the Buie sect fell under Clan MacDonald. My ancestor Archibald Buie and three of his brothers came to the Carolinas in 1739 - and here I am today!
9
Really enjoy your presentations! I always learn something- especially about haplogroups. Many thanks!
9
My parents were born in the azores so I grew up in a Portuguese household. I did a DNA test a few years back for shits and giggles. And it turns out I am mostly Portuguese but also almost a quarter Irish, and the rest German like almost 20%

A few months ago I heard about Strathclyde and ever since I've wanted to learn more about it. The people who lived there, their language and culture and their history. Good video👍
9
I've always heard that green was a variant of brown (obviously with no red), thus hazel is somewhere on that scale. When I was a kid I was told I had greenish blue (pers) eyes but now they are definitely hazel. Which makes it much easier on my passport, no one seems to know what pers eyes are. I don't think there are others in my family with hazel. They all have brown or blue.
9
inuits and other people native to the very far north would be in trouble if they had blue eyes since they would be much more susceptible to snow blindness, brown eyes is much more important there. Blue eyes would only have been evolved in a very specific part of the world that has low light conditions but not too cold, such as the same climate as much of northern europe.

Hi , very enjoyable content. As an Ulster Scot with traceable ancestry back as far as 930 AD ish I can say that these tales are passed down generation to generation. Thanks for the vid
