  1. Around 7000 years ago Celtic culture/people did not exist and did not appear as a distinct people/culture until 1300 BC, at the earliest (The Urnfield Culture of Central Europe, sometimes called Proto-Celtic).

  2. Doesn't "caladh" mean port/harbour in Irish? ("cala" in Scottish Gaelic). There must have existed a Hispano-Celtic cognate "cale", yielding place names such as Portus Cale (Oporto), which later on in the Middle Ages (12th century) served as the coronym for the newly created country.

  3. I'm fairly new to this. I had my DNA done by Ancestry which confirmed that the second largest percentage of my DNA is Scotish. My father''s last name was Murray but he was forced to change it to King by his mother who divorced my father's father. (It wasn't his fault she married Murray! lol). The largest percentage of my DNA is from south western England, specifically Bristol. I enjoyed your video but I'm not familiar with your accent because I'm American. My parents met while my father was stationed near Bristol during WWII. My mother and her family are from Bristol.

Both Scottish and Scythian DNA corresponds with: R1b Y-DNA Haplogroups H, U and T Autosomal genes rs4988235, rs1426654, HMGA2 and EFEMP1, for lactase production, lighter skin, and taller stature respectively. Which is specifically Northwestern European DNA, so yes, the Scots are definitely related to the Scythians🏹.

  8. I am an American. I am 1/16 Thuringian, 1/8 Hessian, the rest English & Scottish. I am more English than Scottish. My ancestors came to America in waves between 1620 & 1890.

  13. At the 225 BC Battle of Telemon, the Roman authors remarked that when trapped between two Roman armies. The Celts did NOT run, they acted like Roman professionals and turned and faced both Roman Armies. It was a hard fought battle. And as to Celtic warfare, we have the last example of it with the Highland armies at the Battle of Cullonden 1745.

  15. Thanks for this! Beautiful area - can’t wait to visit Scotland one day. My mothers Danish, all my cousins are there in Jutland. My DNA shows my Danish heritage is based in Copenhagen, Jutland, and there’s a big chunk of Scottish as well. We’re all taller than the historical findings, with the women 5’5”-5’11”, and the men 5’10-6’2”. But i expect everyone has gotten taller thanks to more food. Blond predominates, but in-laws brought in dark brown hair and eyes. My cousin Søren looks like a Viking poster boy with white blond hair, ice blue eyes, and sharp features. Folks in Yorkshire look a lot like my uncles. The idioms in York also translate fairly neatly into Danish idioms, suggesting some influence way back when.

  22. Great info and insight into the banshees, tanks. But I was so upset by the self mutilation of the Colm character, I had a difficult time watching the film after that. The choking of the wee burro was so hard too. Why would an artist cut off his own fingers? As a supposed punishment to his former friend? So I was told that this was a metaphor about how Ireland itself was very divided about how it saw itself after the war of independence. Even the radical IRA factions were divided and fighting (thanks again Wikipedia) but this self mutilation was so personal and disgusting and hard to watch, I could hardly stand it. I just couldn’t imagine purposefully writing it into this story as McDonogh did. Anyone else?

  27. Interesting question. A whole war only known to us form a few lines of prose. I think if it had been a glorious Roman victory there would have been more known about it. The combined attack from the Picts, Irish and Saxons suggests that Britain had been perceived as weak, perhaps native troops had been called overseas? It was probably a season or two of border and costal raiding that was quelled by some minor skirmishes, though the term ''Picts broken'' may suggest more aggressive measures by the Romans, however, if the Picts had been truly broken then you wouldn't need to sure up Hadrian's wall. For all we know the raiders were paid off and went home rich, which was a common diplomatic option in the 4th century.

  28. I’m in the early stages of looking into my ancestry and I’m finding it interesting. I’m an Australian Robertson whose family emigrated from Isle of Skye in the 1850s. It turns out my autosomal background is about 59% Irish, 33% Scandinavian, 4% German, 2% Southern Indian (Ceylonese colonists I believe). Haplogroup wise, my line goes back to medieval Ireland, being downstream of the Uí Fidgenti and Dáire Cerbba, who I know are semi-mythological, but it’s a cool story so I’ll run with it. Up until very recently I had no idea of my Irish origins, so all of this is very new to me, and I have a lot to find out. Currently waiting on another test with a larger database for better matching so I can really start digging.

  34. I’m about as Viking as you get on my paternal line. My brother and I are both blue eyed blondes though his hair is white blonde where mine is gold. My late husband was known as a black Scot, black hair and blue eyes. A stunning look as everyone knows.

  35. Great video, was very helpful for my family heritage research. I'm Hungarian but I have a bloodline that goes back to medieval Dutch/Saxon people. These ancestors moved to Slovakia in the 12th century and didn't really mix with the locals. Therefore I've got quite a big percentage of Scandinavian DNA in my results and many of my distant cousins are Danish and Swedish. To me, it seems like my DNA has the Viking era Dutch DNA and not newer or older "versions".

  37. My grandma was descended from highland scots who were some of the first who set out for Nova Scotia… MacDonalds from the Hebrides, clan Ranald. She was this tiny little thing, feisty, olive skin, thick black hair and dark eyes. And the temper! I know it’s not at all scientific or proveable, but I always thought of her as a tiny Pictish warrior woman ❤ How does one discovery Pictish ancestry if you don’t mind me asking? Can it be done with autosomal markers or is it only linked to haplogroups? She was H37 but I think her matrilineal line may have been from England or Germany.

Being Ptolemaic rulers they were from(originated in) Macedonia having been descended from Generals of Alexanders army and so would have had plenty of experience/contact with Celts from they're northern border indeed I'm pretty sure Alexander had Celtic tribes with him acting as mounted scouts and shock troops on his tour of Persia.

  40. I grew up saying I had brown eyes with bits of green in them, it wasnt till my daughter had science class in school that I learned (from her) that I had hazel eyes !! :-) For some reason I had always thought hazel eyes were a shade of blue. D'oh!

  41. My Paternal Dad's side hails from Northern Ireland. The surnames of Scottish clans on this side are 'Gilliland' and 'Mcpherson'. Even though we descend primarily from the Scottish lowlands as opposed to the Scottish Highlands.

  42. My eyes were hazel when I was younger. They definitely had a ring of gold around the iris surrounded by a blue green color. I have since lost the gold and now call my eyes gray as they are pretty light and look blue or a little green depending on the colors around me. Has anyone else had their eye color change over the years?

  50. There is an Irish myth/legend about an Egyptian princess who escaped diuring a civil war during the rule of Nefertiti and Akhenaten with the stone of destiny. Oddly enough the Hyxos ‘foreign rulers of Egypt were red haired and we in Britain particularly in Scotland have upto a 30% genetic trait directly from Egyptian pharaohs compared to the 1 to 4% of modern day Egyptians have, pretty fascinating.
