  5. My Mum's family are McGill's from County Down, descended, patrilinealy, from Gall Gael mercenaries that arrived from Galloway in the 14th century. The family identify as Irish, but are very proud of their Scots Gallowglas heritage. Interestingly, my Scots Dad's lowland family are of patrilineal Norse descent. You'd be surprised at how many Norsemen settled in the lowlands and the borders, marrying into the Anglian and Cumbric people that were already there.

  8. Great job. Very up-to-date and succinctly presented. I am English and live in America. This video is a good way of explaining why it is not always easy for genealogical companies like Ancestry to separate out DNA from the various parts of Europe and particularly the British Isles.

  9. I was reading about reading the close relationship between the italic and celtic cultures and languages. There is a hypothesised proto italo-celtic language and that they may have become separated from each other because of the alps and the non Indo-European etruscans in the north

  17. My paternal grandmother was a Duncan and was born in Glasgow, and came to Canada in the late 1880s or early 1890s. My maternal grandmother was a Young. I married a Hamilton who also happened to be born in Glasgow!

I forgot to mention, in Hawaii we have mythology of our people going out and colonizing egypt and sumeria :) Our language shares a lot in common with hebrew which is really weird and seems almost impossible. But our mythos states they descended from us. We are taught there are FIVE great floods or resets.

And danu in India means water,river,drop of water.. and there is a rigveda God danu in India. And there are so many rivers in Europe I think which starts in the root of danu, like Danube,and so many I forgot and Sanskrit is the oldest language also. My brother = hazel, me = dark green as a kid. Now they are blue most of the time but still dark green now & then. My husband = brown. Our daughter = hazel

In my area there are A LOT of celtic arecheological stuff, burials, steles (the oldest celtic inscription ever was found near where i live) an unearthed stone circle to calculate the dates, rock carvings and even the remains of the ancient town, with the dug basements and foundations. Im from Como.

  29. I'm a Grant and have no information if I'm related to Scottish Grants. I've only traced my Grant line back to UK. Have Scottish ancestors from Arbroath, 'Littlejohn' but I'd love to find more on Grants. Can only get to Henry Theodore Grant (1826-1900). Born in UK but always parents unknown. He was transported to Tasmania. He's my great-great grandfather and he had a son William Henry, in Tas,. who is the father of my grandfather Edward 'Jack' Grant. I met a Grant here in Tasmania, who knew he was from Scottish clans, and he was tall, and I could see him in his clan colours with a axe in his hand, and he looked like a clansman.

  35. Great video, thanks for sharing. For my part my family, the Colvilles are of Norman origin. Our family tree is massive, beginning in circa 1000 A.D. with Gilbert de Colville, and later his son William would join the invasion of England in 1066. It's kind of fuzzy to me what happened immediately thereafter, but I know the Colvilles were granted land in Scotland. My particular branch of the family came to the newly formed United States of America about a decade or so after it's founding and spread west, dropping the 'e' from the end of our name at some point for reasons unknown. Oh, also our motto is "Oublier Ne Puis", or "We Cannot Forget".

From Jutland, Denmark and did one of those DNA tests (for what they are worth) a couple of years ago and it came back with 13,9 % Scottish/Irish, 10,3% Eastern European and the rest was Scandinavian. I have no know relatives from either EE or Scotland, Ireland so it may reflect where a certain seafaring people went or perhaps comes from later historical events.

One thing about the Denmark 2008 study regarding the 'origin of blue eyes being the Black sea region'. This sort of finding can be defeated by logic: thus if the mutation for blue eyes spontaneously arose sometime in the black sea area, why could it also spontaneously arise elsewhere?

  42. my maiden name is Sinclair. A baron came over from France with William the conqueror. He came from St Clare in Normandy. My ancestors migrated down from Sutherland round about the Highland clearances and settled in central Scotland. I often wonder if the baron's name St Clare could have changed over the years to become Sinclair. I've never tried to source anymore information

  45. Noswaith dda Steven Goch! 😊 My Stewart’s originally came from Brittany to Scotland. Hard to say about the ifs and buts as to what would’ve happened hadn’t the Anglo Saxons of invaded. There certainly would’ve been a different ‘norm’ to what it is now. Whatever would’ve happened. I’m pretty sure the Royal Houses of Wales would’ve survived and my many times great grandfather from Powys would still be fighting against the Gwynedd lot and capturing castles and burning houses down, taking prisoners, and generally running amok! ✊🏻

  47. Great video! People should read John Reid's Eagle and the Bear, which was published this year. It may be the best book to date on Rome's wars with the indigenous tribes of northern Britain. Those living north of Hardian's Wall were very tough and fierce fighters, and even the few Roman sources that remain describe them as such.
