Can't remember where I picked this wee gem from but I definitely remember a history of genetics book stating there were almost no skeletal examples of arthritis in Britain before the Viking settlements. There does seem to be a definite link between Viking ancestry and a condition named 'Depuytren Contracture', which causes the fingers of the hand to contract towards the palm.

  15. I am a Bard from the United States. I can trace my lineage back to clan Baird. I also have some Forbes in my ancestry which is a Pict name. Legend is that a Bard once saved the life of the King of Scotland from the attack of a wild boar, and a boar is part of our coat of arms. Looking forward to the video.

Further along in my own haplogroup research I'm starting to think I'm from Cumbria (what a shame I can't learn Cumbric), trying my damnedest to trace the steps in a multidisciplinary way without getting too far ahead of myself.😅 Anyways, you've always got a R-BY13124 watching your videos!   19. Frisian is considered the sister language of English. There were two pockets of Frisian that survived until relatively recently in northern Germany. They remained mutually intelligible and were more similar to Old Frisian than the Frisian spoken modernly in the Netherlands. There was a recording of Wangerooge Frisian on the fräisker channel, and it was fascinating to listen to. The speaker mentioned the year 1813, and he pronounced thirteen as thretiin. The th was a real interdental fricative and the R was heavily trilled. The University of Halle has the recordings on old Edison cylinders, and I wish someone would put them back up on the Internet. I grew up a stone's throw from the Mexican border and grew up hearing and speaking Spanish. Once in a blue moon, I'll run into another güero who speaks it fluently with a flawless Mexican accent, but that truly is once in a blue moon. Two years in Germany left me quite conversant, but it's going to seed.

  26. Women were actually better off in the Viking Age (apart from the slaves) Then the slaves could also be freed and then included in society. Maybe the woman you talk about in the video came voluntarily or was freed later? I myself have roots mostly from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. My ancestors have been here at least before the Viking Age, around the year 500 anyway. Descended from kings and warriors, but not rich for that 😊 Ordinary Nordic man. Born and lives in Sweden.   27. An amazing amount of research has gone into this. Thank you. It confirms the west of our country put up strong resistance to these invaders and I respect that. And it was the last stand for our ancient ancestors, thier beliefs and customs. I mourn the fact that we, in the rest of Britain, have lost our ancient culture because of these invaders. But I am pleased the Welsh still have thier pride and own language, to show us how resilient they were to foreign immigrants. Even now, us English think it's a strange thing that the the Welsh have thier own language, but I respect the reason . . . They are what's left of our true identity before the Italian forces tried to wipe us off the map. I believe it was all about control of the masses, and to do that you need to destroy or take over thier belief system. The Italians did exactly that. In doing so our countries' culture was demonized by them. Edward 1st of England ruined any chance of Wales getting back it's power and individuality. The rest is history . . . Lest we forget.

  36. I'm English. My family tree goes back to the 1700s with every member being from the same Lincs/S.Yorks area. Recently did my DNA which came back 65% North Western European, 24% English, 11% Welsh.

  38. They were Gaelic speaking Norse Gaels or Gall Ghaeil and as such were perfect as royal bodyguards and heavy infantry. At the same time as they were culturally and linguistically compatible, they were removed from internecine tribal politics and were loyal unto death. Initially, they worked seasonally, returning to western Scotland for the winter. Eventually, many Gallowglass established themselves permanently in the clans they served. Over time and with intermarriage these Gallowglass became predominantly Irish Gaels, although their Scottish cousins continued to serve intermittently.

Off the coast of Africa..going out into the ocean and north toward Iceland......and about where the tectonic plates meet. IMO.....   46. On my Mother’s side, I have mt-Haplogroup K. I found it a tad surprising that K is not common in Germany today. Of course, on my Mother’s side , I have predominantly Welsh, Scottish, and English ancestry. So, this could explain the difference. Your opinion?

  49. How about McLeod of Lewes and Harris (it has 2 distinct branches) and another Highland clan McNeil who claims descent from Niall Of The 9 Hostages? Apparently either McNeil or the Irish clan O'Neill isn't correct as they both claim descent from him, because each have a different Y haplotype. 😮
