  1. Ann, Few people in this generation want to live on a small farm and raise animals and maybe chickens it is just way to much work. If a person was raised on a small farm and then decides to continue the life style it is much easier, they already know how much time it takes day to day to keep the farm functioning. I was raised on a small farm in the 1950s and 60s so I know how much time it takes to make it work. I do not know when you decided to take up this life style but you seem to be very knowledgeable as to what it takes to keep a farm going. This is what America was like from the early years of it's founding , most people lived pretty close to the earth then the modern era came. In the videos of Ukraine, Russia and other Eastern Block Countries on the evening news so much lately, small farm living, cows, chickens and cattle are still very common and in much of the Third World. Enjoyed your big smile and cheerful presentation and keeping a way of life alive that is mostly part of our past.

  3. I could never imagine life without my goats. They bring so much joy to me. BUT your right Anne, not everyone should get them. They are ALOT of work. I am retired, and I could not imagine caring for goats, properly, if I had to leave my home to work. I also do not make money from them. They are essentially my hobby. As you mentioned, thanks to 2020. The market it oversaturated. They are not a good financial source for a small farm.

  4. Excellent video as a former owner of small herd of goats I thought your advice was excellent; I miss my goats but as a 70 year old widow it not realistic anymore. Sold the last one that survived coyotes he sired a kid before his death; goats are a joy and a challenge 😂

  16. I use mulched leaves on my beds around my plants. I mow the leaves and dump it in a location I can scoop from. The bottom is usually back to soil by the time I get to it.

  18. I have a desk job in front of a computer - when the weekend comes, I get doing things with my hands. It clears the head, is good for the mental health and gives you personal purpose. Great video!

A species can be both naturalized and invasive, for example Himalayan blackberries here in the PNW or European/western honeybees in the US. "Native" has a fairly specific meaning ecologically so I think there will definitely be a lot of watchers who think it's important to differentiate Love your videos by the way

  28. Three cheers! Yes, I built up the family Hobby Farm gardens, designed and chistled timbers into timberframe barn, then decided "hey!? what am I going to do with an empty barn!?" So I bought 1 mama and 1 baby Nubian goats. They were super. Mama provided the next round of 5. I immediately realized I was then way over population for their pen and run size. The dairy goats turned into meat goats :( . The next generations of goats were very healthy until I rescued a miniature fixed buck... he apparently came with a mild condition that went viral when he tried to mix into the established heard. Then that entered my goat area soil, and it never terminated. Only perpetual diatomaceous earth diet and the season rounds of injection medications would quell the ailment, but never obliviated it. The herd numbers had to remain balanced. The buck odor had to be tolerated. I loved caring for them for some 14 years, but when feed prices skyrocketed, my time was further strained, then I had to end the herd. Drats... If any readers doubt if they should get some goats, then I say emphatically "NO!" However, if any readers are most assured that they will put forth the time and effort that Anne and family are doing, then it is emphatically "YES!!"

  30. Honey... I don't have goats because they taught me to swear, and I can NOT keep them contained. BUT... when I had them, I was quite happy to EAT the babies, albeit at 12 months old.. so never am I left with animals I can not get rid of.

  31. Like you I trusted a crooked builder who not only took my money - big dummy me - but never did the work. Took him to court and won where he then disappeared. Seven years later I am almost finished doing the job myself. Not as big of a loss as you took by any means, but being taken advantage of hurts to say the least.

  34. For those of us that live in cold climates, the fact that chard can stay alive all winter in a greenhouse to give fresh greens when everything else around it is dead, is amazing. It also has a naturally salty flavor that is enjoyable, even fresh on a sandwich.

  36. Having a phd in YouTube watching for gardening and woodworking I have to say this was one of the more pleasurable and informative videos I’ve seen. Very insightful and will be adapting the layered raised bed with cardboard in my own garden. Also in 7b zone. And yes, those guineas are great for tick elimination but never shut up bragging about it. They can also be suicidal as I’ve seen them curse out a pair of red tail hawks. Well,, at least I don’t have to listen to all the bragging any more.

  38. I'm sitting here in tears at this video. I'm thankful for your honesty. Some parts of life are so hard and sharing them with someone else just makes it easier. I feel so isolated but I'm surrounded by many. Left the big city and trying to gather knowledge and funds to buy our own place, while raising a family, supporting aging parents and trying to make new friends in a new place. Life sure does have some steep roads. Love the message in this video. Thank you for sharing this valuable advice.
