There’s a lot to unpack here…so, I’ve been a Toyota ‘team member’ now working on my 27th year mostly in assembly. I started out in short block sub assembly in 1999 assembling 1MZ and shortly thereafter the 3MZ. In 2006 we transitioned to the 2GR fe and in 2016 the 2GR fks and now in 2022 transitioned to the 2.4Tfts. When the GR engine came along in our plant I was assigned to UPPER assembly. One of my jobs was to install the dampers, tensioner and timing chain. Our takt time was 56 seconds…that means you have 56 seconds to install those parts before the next engine comes into your ‘pitch,’ then you move on to the next one. In the beginning of production there was very little wiping. As production progressed, wiping started on all sealing surfaces, and many changes were made on the timing chain cover installation to address the timing chain cover leaks. We added humidifiers and extra wipes and a ‘buff’ to the cylinder head and the timing chain cover itself. We looked at oil contamination from the VVT gears, the timing chain, the timing chain tensioner, and we increased our glove changes. In 2016 when the 2GR fks came along all of that was continued and Toyota added larger bolts to the timing chain cover at the 3 point sealing area where the timing chain cover leaked on the 2GR fe. My point is, we became obsessed with stopping leaks. Now on the 2.4fts, EVERY sealing surface is wiped with a special alcohol based solution. One thing about these parts though especially the cam towers in this video; no sealing surface was ever touched by a glove. The cam towers on the GR engine was delivered by AGC to a conveyor and then installed by a mechanical hoist. I’m not saying they couldn’t be contaminated, but I doubt if they were contaminated by dirty gloves, most likely something during conveyance. Rest assured, the 2.4T should NOT leak because of anything production is doing. As AMD has said, nothing is perfect. Trust me, we take every measure possible and we constantly communicate and reflect on how we can do a better job producing quality engines

I purchased NEW back in 2010 a "Top-OF - The - LINE " Toyota Prius Model 5, the most expensive, and best equipped version, and I added every option available to that car. After only 11 years it finally broke down, and refused to start while parked in my driveway. The Hybrid System warning light was on, and I eventually had it towed to the local Toyota Sales emporium. The Invertor had died, and two months later I got the Prius back, repaired and operable. It was at 102,000 miles, so Toyota covered the repair under the original warranty, let me have a loaner car, and it cost me nothing. So I concur, that Toyota's are as good as new cars get.
