  1. Great video Derek! Pertinent in an age where people aren't willing to listen to each other and only attempt to persuade , ending up in even more biased and extreme positions. It was also a good example of how cognitive dissonance works both ways. I could feel myself getting frustrated at the first 3 minutes of the video when I believed you to be proposing an "unscientific" concept. Thanks for being a great example of how we can make science more well received by the general public by making it less patronizing. Science shouldn't be polarising.

  4. I am an optical engineer and at the end of one of our optics courses the prof gave us a 90 minute lecture on the topic of rainbows. It was incredible and convinced me to do something with light in my professional life. Your visual explanations gave birth to that what the prof taught us 15ish years ago. Thank you!

Really important safety fact for people doing this at home, one that almost cost me an eye: Thermite CAN ignite with a blowtorch if it's in small enough quantities (think spoonful or so) and if it's FINELY POWDERED aluminum and iron oxide. It takes a while to ignite with a blowtorch so the whole pile heats up to ~1000 °C. Under those conditions, the reaction happens violently, like flash powder, and sprays molten slag and metal blobs everywhere at high speed. Only though luck or the grace of God was I not seriously injured when I found that out, since I was within arms reach holding the blowtorch. Always take precautions and wear eye protection and other protective gear when working with energetic materials!

  9. In case Tom is interested, the nail with 37 on it is a date nail. These were hammered into the wooden ties that the rails of train tracks were spiked to. Sometimes on the end of the tie, sometimes on top. They were commonly collected by railroad fans who, by doing so, stymied the purpose of the nails. It helped keep track (no pun intended) of how long the ties had been there … and possibly have some indication of when the tie should be replaced (ties in dry climates would need to be replaced less frequently than those in wetter climates). There types of nails (as well as a kind of ‘spike’ that looks a bit like a strange, two pronged bottle cap) were also used on telegraph/telephone poles and on utility poles … particularly ones that ran along beside the tracks. (All of this is my best recollection of info. Any inaccuracies are on me). I hope that Tom finds the clarification of what his 37 nail means, interesting. :- )

  13. Wow! This should be shown in every school. The combination of so many subjects explained in a relatable and understandable way is extremely eyeopening. Imagine a day where you watch this video and discuss it in different classes: chemistry, history, biology, ethics, physics. You could even relate it to art with painters like Otto Dix. I think that's what's missing a lot at ordinary schools: A tangible well connected story, making one understand why this knowledge is important and useful. Great work, Veritasium-Team!

  25. Your path to Youtube was very unique, but I still thought that it was eerily similar to mine. I was also stuck in that mode of following a fixed path through academia, but I always felt like it was missing the creative part that I needed. I ended up quitting my chem masters and I intended to apply to film school. However, before I was able to do that, the Youtube channel had taken off and I was able to shift my focus to it. The first couple of years were shaky with a lot of doubts, but now I don't see how I could do anything else.

  41. Well, I have three salt lamps, and I've always been skeptical to the whole negative ion thing. I still enjoy them because they are nice to look at, and provide a nice level of low light conducive to my circadian rhythm in the evening. What I especially like about this debunking is that anyone who has these lamps can go forth and spend less money in the long run on both bulbs and electricity by using LED night light bulbs instead, because who cares if it produces less heat. Thanks for the info!
