  15. My grand-uncle the youngest of my grandpa's brothers was there in the 60s he ws a spanish legionnaire and a total chracter. He died a few years ago and kept a lot of stories and secrets untold but I manage to make him talk and tell me some of the shit he went thru and it was wild. He end up with Bob Denard and Martinez de Velasco in Choc II of 6 Comando in a contingent of about 100 spanish mercs who fought for Moishe Tshombe. He told me wild stuff, they lived among the natives who offer them their homes (and their women) so while the Spanish were there they were safe from the guerrillas, that several companions were hack to pieces and eaten by the rebels, that the Congolese unit they were training learn to sign the "death march" of the Spanish Legion but in the native lingo, that they have a priest like the fucking tercios celebrate mass at morning and then march and fight the rest of the day. There was a spanish reporter, that at some point things got so serious they stuff him with a FAL and a revolver and told him to shot first and be a reporter later. Then happened the merc rebellion around the 67 but Choc II theoretically remain loyal to the government, I never understood exactly what happened and I'm quite sure my uncle neither and never knew exactly what happened but Velasco and some of the officers were recall to the Congolese HQ where they were executed, hack to pieces and thrown to the crocodiles... hours later the Spanish unit was attacked by the Congolese and had to fight their way out of the country. My uncle was wounded in the left leg and got an infection that almost killed him. Luckily they made it out into Gabon and into Spanish Guinea to be evacuated back to Spain. He returned to Africa as a merc several times thru the 70s, in Angola were more crazy stuff happened and almost died too bc of infighting among the mercs and into Rhodesia at some point but he went as a para trainer. He was the one to told me that everyone there, the natives, the mercs, the press, the colonist in some way or another they were kinda crazy and that evil dwell in the Congo and make everyone behave like savages and tht the poor bastards that live there are in serious need of Jesus and the salvation of their souls, and I believed him.
