  3. My wife worked at the rehab facility in NJ where Keith was recovering from the stroke. She told me that every day he would go to the lobby and sit at the piano and play as part of his therapy. She had no idea who he was, but when she told me his name I could not believe it. Rick, this interview was just amazing and it’s great to see that Keith continues to do the thing he loves most which is to make magic come out of his piano.

You are a class act Rick and you inspire this no-talent 56 year old guitar player stuck on the pentatonic scale in A-minor to continue to try and learn and improve. I feel like I know you because we’re close to the same age and all your lists are identical to mine. I literally shed tears when Neal Peart and EVH passed. Anyway, I wish you continued success and enjoy your videos because of your obvious love and enthusiasm for all things musical. I’ve never seen an interview where he is as relaxed and comfortable as this one. Usually when he’s interviewed with his band mates, he’s quiet and reserved.   16. The point at 22:30 into this interview is WHY artists WANT to participate in these interviews and WHY we want to watch. Rick describes a voicing of an FMaj chord with a open B and a G# note that normally wouldn't be thought of to play together, that would normally sound somewhat dissonant on most guitars unless PERFECTLY intonated and perfectly played... Then Julian remembers the song and the chord being referenced and reproduces it and talks about the care required to get those strings to ring with that level of clarity, from finger pressure to strumming... What other interviewer on the PLANET has the listening focus and knowledge to pick up on that and raise it in an interview and elicit such insightful information from the artist?

Rick is not a journalist who has to do an interview with an artist he doesn’t like, or one that is full of himself, is provoking artists to get quotes to sell magazines or intentionally misquotes trying to cause a shitstorm for publicity. Rick is a musician himself and genuinely cares about the people he interviews and their art. It shows. And the artists see that. And then they let their guard down, because he is not one of the vultures they usually get.

  42. As a lefty, this was super entertaining and pretty much how I've felt all my life trying to play right handed guitars. Put off getting a guitar for the first 23 years of my life, got one last year finally after deciding "screw it, I'll learn left handed despite how hard it might be (spoiler: not any harder than learning right hand.)" - Needless to say that was the best decision ever and learning guitar over the past year has been an absolute dream. I love the challenge and am so glad I committed to just getting a lefty after EVERYONE including the guy at my local music store warned me against it. It just feels absolutely unnatural to play right handed and with how many hours I clocked in on guitar hero on lefty mode as a kid, I really was naturally used to strumming with my left hand! Awesome video Rick and shoutout to Lefty guitarist across the globe!

  45. Ivan Davis was my piano teacher and a good friend of Martha Argerich. One of his stories was he couldn't make a competition and asked if she wanted to go instead. The piece to be played was the Prokofiev Toccata Op. 11. He said she sight read through it 2 times, and the 3rd time played at tempo from memory. There are just some musicians on a completely different level than the rest, really the same as Einstein or Fourier.
