  24. Shane, this is such an important video. I come from a south Asian family. Our culture for jobs is “doctor, lawyer, engineer or bust.” My mom made me promise her to become a doctor when I was young. I fooled myself into thinking that’s what I loved. I was a genetics wizard in high school. I told myself this is it for me, there’s no better career. I never assessed anything else or gave myself a chance to study anything else. My first two years of undergrad, I even completed premed. And then I dropped it because I realized I didn’t want to do it. All it took was a few classes in other subjects. That quick. I realized I love computer science more, I loved math, engineering, and design. It hurt me a lot that I wasted two years of my undergrad and fell behind. I was stuck in a major that I didn’t love, so I had to do some extra school to catch up with others in CS. I was in more debt. Now I work in tech, in something not even remotely related to medicine. I make well over 100k working from home year round (not just during this virus) coding on my computer. And I couldn’t be happier. I do wish I had done my schooling properly though and I’ll never get the years I wasted back. And I’m an extra 40k in debt for extra schooling to catch up to CS majors. Being a doctor is extremely respectable, especially in pandemic situations like we are in now. But it’s not meant for everyone. I wish I had access to this video 7 years ago when I started college. So if you’re reading this and come from a high pressure culture like mine, please assess your interests and passions carefully. If you choose to go premed and be a doctor, please make sure you’ll be happy. Thanks Shane for making this and I hope others take your advice and are more careful than me.
