A short video, without being a YT Short. I like this much better because you can't cast a Short and I'm not always watching on my phone.

I liked that ThinkPad. You can replace the WiFi module, the HDD/SDD, and the memory sticks. Congratulations for the price and the choice! As a device name, you could call this new laptop Amelia, in honor of Amelia Earhart (famous American pilot). As you will be using this device as a test pilot for distros and other works, I think it's a fair name.

Fantastic content. You are a very cool person! Glad to see people still keeping the flame of this era alive.
33
It is a gloomy rainy day today but thanks for making it better. 😀

Oh cool! I've actually been wishing lately that we would go back to using more single purpose devices. I kind of think that if the Internet was only accessible on desktop computers, and we used PDAs for organizing our lives, mp3 players for music, and cell phones just for text and calls, we might be better off than we are. I worry the constant companionship of smartphones makes us way too susceptible to the post-truth meme-fueled hellscape we seem intent on building.

I used Sid for some couple of years on my laptop with unattended-upgrades running every day. In that period of time, I learned to repair all sorts of things that can break in Debian. That was valuable time. Now I'm back on stable or testing in some cases.

Nice job on being ahead of the gnome pronunciation questions, lol. Though I'm a wm user, I look forward to seeing what they come up with. DWM is nice, and bspwm is surprisingly cosy.
32
"Columnize"? "Columnify"? Either way you've made a columnizer out of me.
32
You bring an interesting new flavor of videos in this tech-y linux area of youtube, and I much appreciate your work! Getting some merch eventually
32
Hello! I watched your Commodore 64 online video recently and it helped a lot to get my C128 online, so thank you!

Cobol is still the base for many large applications of today in large companies. Young IT people don't want to learn it any more so there's plenty of opportunities to make a good living out of it. I programmed for 40 years mainly in cobol and assembly and not only maintenance but also new programs so all that code is there to stay for many more years. Good luck with your new challenge 👍

Not related specifically to `cd`, but using Alt-. (hold alt, tap period) is fantastic when navigating the shell. If I've just done `mkdir -p /some/long/path/name`, I can then go to the newly created directory by typing `cd ` , pressing Alt-. to insert the last word of the last command, and then enter. If it's from several commands ago, I just keep pressing Alt-. Then there's also `pushd .` and `popd` if you wanna get fancy.

Love SSH... fast, secure, can do file transfers easily multiple ways... and can trivially be centrally managed with a key server. That might be an idea for a vid too: Key servers. Edited to add: I mean e.g. LDAP vs universal key managers vs simple inotify to copy pub keys to servers that kind of thing. More than one way to skin SSH. :)

Veronica, the time you spend explaining concepts without assuming I have a high level of knowledge on them, and also not being patronizing about it is really pleasant. As is your positive approach to things. Having you, Taylor, and Amy together is just an absolute delight.

Around 1989 or so my Buddy had a Commodore 64 and when he showed me you could send a "letter" by hooking the thing up to the phone line, it blew my mind. I was only 9 years old and it was my first experience using a computer beyond games or "educational programs". At the time we couldn't even imagine we'd be watching people make their own "TV Shows" on a computer monitor.

"Imagine if Microsoft shipped you a entire extra processor just to run Excel" reminds me that while you can now use Python (alongside VBA) in Excel, that code has to execute on Azure. 🤦♂️ Anyway, happy V-Day! V stands for Veronica in my book!

"The printer has a little grippy bit" Yes, this is the technical term for the paper feed. Great video!!!
29
Ventoy often does not work with latest version of the ISOs. Those options are far more easier for a noob. Also, Ventoy does have a bad support for secure boot, while the ISOs, when burned directly, often support it. I understand her.
28
Your no nonsense explanations are great!
28
The local feed is, IMO, the "killer app" of Mastodon. It really does feel like a BBS. I've also been telling my friends that ask to stick to an instance that sounds interesting, but in the end that don't matter cuz you can just move if you find a better one or a more interesting one!
28
I've been using Linux since 1996 and have never used the column command - thank you, this looks really useful! As for the COBOL output to JSON using column, I like it a lot - it reminded me of my younger days of using perl scripts as glue between two systems that vendors said were compatible out of the box (a lie).
27
You GOTTA do a video about your editing workflow. This is a very well made and incredibly well edited video. Would love to see a video about encryption. Mainly risks involved in encrypting it and what would happen to my data in case my OS fucks up etc. I've seen everyone recommending it but not sure what happens in case my OS fucked up my drive or in case my hard disk fails -- does data recovery become harder with encryption ? Timeshift video might also be nice
27
As someone who was "cool" in the mid-nineties, I appreciate the spacehog based puns.
27
"Verbosity" is such a great word. Very underrated.
26
I'm glad you are feeling better Veronica. It's good to have you back!
26
5:27 For such a bright, sunny personality, you are the queen of dirty looks . Love this vid. Thanks for all you do. I tell all my friends: "Linux is awesome, and so is Veronica!"
26
I like how you pick more basic tools to not bog down the video with "you could also do this x y or z way" I havent used clonezilla in a long time, this was a nice refresher. I briefly used Acronis for work (because the boss said so) until I set up a FOG Project server and migrated our images into it (waaaay beyond the scope for your videos). Home stuff I'm too lazy to keep an ISO around and dd into gzip from whatever live iso i have in the moment for image backups.
26
I would love a BSD vs Linux (or even more generally Unix vs Linux).... Manjaro XfCE here btw.
25
Congratulations! I know you'll continue to be a smashing success. 🙏
25
Hi Veronica! Great stuff as always.
25
I'm very happy for you, Veronica. I wish you all the best in your new endeavors, and I look forward to seeing more frequent videos from you in the future. 🎉
25
We have forgotten how amazing computers are.
24
I’ve been in into systems engineering for the last 15 years, and dammit, i can confirm, this Girl rocks! She clearly knows exactly the best practices and workarounds… another excellent video. I would appreciate to work with someone like you.
24
I thought the main attraction of Arch was the learning process of doing the traditional install. When/if I test it on one of my machines I'll do the fun, slow, step-by-step with the wiki open on the side, like you mentioned. As for naming the machine: Veronica + Arch(ie) leads back to both the old internet programs (using your-neck-of-the-woods gopher protocols) and the even older comic books, so maybe something like Jughead or Betty or Reggie?
23
Excellent video! Love your sense of humor and presentation style.
23
Nice columnded(?) lyrics in the back :) Thanks Veronica...
23
I was brave enough once, to try the install the arch way. Realized I had not picked and installed what's needed for a minimal DE, and bailed. Ran Manjaro for a couple years and now I'm a fan of Arco-Linux. The installer has come a long way, thank you for sharing!
23
The fun part is finding anagrams of various argument combination. I.e. ls -halt
22
This morning I watched the Youtubers panel on the VCFMW channel, and if I understand correctly that was thanks to you for saving the day with your recording of the event! Thanks!
22
My first linux experience was OpenSUSE + KDE when I was 12, got that from one of the tech magazine CDs. That looked like the future at that time, but I was a kid, had some video games, so I had to multiboot with a heavy heart, but I never stopped booting to linux whenever I was not playing.
22
Didn’t need to watch this video as I knew Balena and Rufus already, but glad I did coz I came to know about two additional tools if they are ever needed
22
I'm not even a beginner yet, but I am very fond of how patiently you balance an understanding of newcomers with anticipatory snark towards splainers who have validation issues! You've helped me make some choices about what I'll be exploring on my old MacBook's Linux partition, and I thank you.
21
I have a Blu-ray drive on my computer. And I will keep it operational and never discard.
21
I remember trying Manjaro i3 a few days after switching to Linux, and oh boy did it make me cry! I got so frustrated that I uninstalled it. Less than a year later I went back to it, after having gained some experience with tiling windows from the Pop Shell extension in Gnome. The second time with i3 wasn't that bad! Nowadays I use i3 exclusively! So, please, moar i3 content! :D

I've been watching Veronica's videos since the 90s and I sure got to say you are in the right place for this type of info

Greetings from Kazakhstan, very nice video Veronica. My good friend Al Sneed just sent me your video. He is a Arch fan and has tried to convince me for years to install it. Now with your video I can see how easy it is to install it, even a city slicker like me can install it. Thank you for you video.
20
Absolutely love this type of content. Was running rainbow stream for a while to have a twitter feed in terminal. Huge supporter of old school terminals accomplishing modern tasks.
20
I don't normally comment basically ever on Youtube because it can make me very nervous about what I say and how it might be taken (I'm autistic, which can result in misunderstandings here and there), but I don't get these Ventoy Bros (I mean, I use Ventoy, but honestly, who cares what you use, as long as it works) while she says in the video she's gonna do a vid on Ventoy.
20
Love this video - so useful! More of this type of content, please :)
20
Even if I recommend ways that does not include terminal for newcomers, I always find myself in terminal for even simple stuff. I think eventually everyone who passes the basic learning curve will use the terminal.
