I definitely agree with the whole right to repair thing, it should be easier for people to repair their own stuff if they can.
Buuuuut, I do disagree with a few other things you mentioned. Regarding cables, I think the switch to USB-C is a good thing. They changed from the old 30-pin connector to lightning over a decade ago, before USB-C was even a thing, so given itâs changing as the EU mandates it and every other manufacturer also changes, I donât think thatâs a negative. Also you missed that the EU are mandating that every electronic device should use USB-C, so the decision to switch to it on Macs as devices originally began the move seems kinda forward thinking in hindsight. (And you can get a USB-A to USB-C adapter for like, $3 now).
The âslowing down old devicesâ thing is a bit of a misnomer. The iPhone 6S (IIRC) had a batch of bad batteries that degraded much quicker and started causing problems. The issue is that when doing something intensive, the CPU can require higher voltage than a degraded battery can provide, causing a restart. This led to an update that reduced max CPU speed when the battery aged, because the alternative was the device restarting. Imo that sounds pretty consumer friendly to me.
On releasing new phones, people are buying new phones all the time, why not incrementally improve them? Youâre still making and shipping them after all, what difference does it make if you put a faster chip in them? And it drops the price of the older model when it probably wouldnât on a 2-year release cycle. Most people wonât buy a new phone every year and if they do, clearly theyâre rich enough that we shouldnât care about them.
Anyway, just my thoughts. I think people can get a little too lost in the sauce over whatâs basically just a YouTube and Instagram device.
