At the end of the day we are all one species: human, but we can be so separated at times just because others are “different” from us when they truly aren’t.

  8. My wife is Japanese with a slightly darker skin than what the average is in Japan and even she got bullied as a kid because of that. I'm sure the times are different and better these days and with open conversation I'm sure things will improve :) all skin tones are beautiful in my opinion. Actually if I had to choose one that is not my favorite, that would be my own, pale, nerdy skin tone haha. I try to get some tan every summer.

I think the dangers from living in Japan is because everyones beliefs is that everyone else is taught to not steal, keep environment clean, be respectful, etc. but when something suspiciously happens and not clear about what happens, most bystanders will not get involved because it's not a typical thing and unexpected. So if someone got harassed, others won't step in and help unless u ask for help.

  12. I have a hard time finding friends in my own country. I can't imagine making Japanese friends in Japan. And I wouldn't want to be friends with only foreigners. Anyways, super awesome how people are learning the language to such a high level. I need to practice more.

  13. I haven't watched anime since like the year 2000 - but I'm really surprised to hear that I've heard of most of these. I was expecting a lot more unique ones. Also, for historical reference, in the late 90s if you asked 100 females in the US if they liked anime, probably only 6 of them had ever heard of it, and maybe 2 watched it. These days I'm quite amazed at how popular anime (and video games) are for male and female.

Thank you for such an insightful video, I am a Scottish man married to a Japanese lady, we have two lovely children who are half Japanese but look very European, we relocated to the main island of Japan a few months ago, it’s amazing to watch how our little boy is starting to speak Japanese after such a short time which he has picked up from mommy, family & nursery, it’s absolutely true that second/foreign languages are initially acquired rather than learnt.

  17. Interesting video! I think the school response at 1:16 is related to Japan as a whole - a lot is based on things like age and length of time versus ability. It's often this way in the corporate world at large Japanese companies. I think your response at the end is great because doing YouTube is kind of going against the grain of what society would want you to do - good for you.

  18. Being a half Japanese American from a small town, I definitely have felt a lot of mixed emotions growing up in rural America and moving to Tokyo as an adult. Who and what I identified as wasn't as straightforward as it is for a lot of people. I really appreciate your content as well as all these people sharing their own experiences. ありがとうね！

  19. I feel like also depending where you're at in Japan as well, you get more stares than others. In the winter it's not an issue but in the summer I notice the stares increase a lot ahahha. Earlier in June I tried to stay covered for as long as I could but couldn't deal with the July heat and I could see people staring or avoiding me more than usual. Super insightful seeing everyones responses and their personal experiences.

  24. Believe it or not, the culture in LA and NYC totally embrace what is unique. Every person on your show today would be celebrated in those two cities as being distinctive and not the traditional American look. Japan should really embrace its refined culture and not reject it. Most trends are passing, but respect, dignity and order will always be highly revered.

  27. I am quite shy for a person from Australia, yet I think I would probably seem extroverted to someone from Japan. I feel I would be comfortable visiting Japan because I am shy. I would like to meet new friends but I find it difficult to express myself and act friendly until I have known someone for a while.

  30. this was really obvious to me every time i traveled to japan. I spoke with foreign women about this topic and they literally had mental breakdowns because of it and thought of leaving. Meanwhile so many foreign men had it easier there in dating than back home. I noticed myself I am getting way more attention from girls in Japan than in my home ( Germany ). Talking to some foreigners there I noticed that for some of them that is the reason why they moved to Japan lol .... not the culture or work or whatever xD

  31. I can never say this enough about not just your content, but content like this in general: it's great to show honestly your country. The good and the bad. When you just show the good, it can be a huge shock, and possibly a danger, when ppl arrive and experience some of the possible negatives of a place. At the same time you don't want to just show bad things or dwell too much on negative experiences when there are many positive things. Its best to try to show the whole experience as it is, as best you can. Anyway, love your videos, you're a very charming interviewer.

  34. I'll never forget the day our daughter's kindergarten teacher called to ask if we spoke English at home. I'd never even thought about it. No, we speak Japanese. The teacher then understood our daughter's broken English. She went on to straight A's all during school.

  42. I went to Japan in March and found it to be fairly inexpensive.. .then again I was coming from California so anything really seems cheaper. Plus the USD is strong against the Yen right now. The hotel was about $70 a night, the flights were $815 round trip on United (granted we bought them before the country was fully open though).

  43. I've been in Japan about 12yrs now. I've dated several Japanese men and the only long relationships I've had are with Japanese men who have lived abroad. But unfortunately most Japanese men aren't interested in the type of foreigner that I am. What I mean is that most want a white, skinny, and blonde girl. They also expect us to accomodate to their culture without trying to understand that I'm a foreigner and no matter how hard I try, I have a different mindset and there will always be a difference. That is why some of the relationships I've been in have been short. They just want to date me because I'm a foreigner...but still want me to become Japanese...how can I ever reach their standards...

It is unfortunate that many Asians have experienced hate crimes here but I assure you as a resident of nyc who lives in a Asian neighborhood, it is not as bad but there needs to be improvements. The restroom problem bothers me too, but they lock restrooms because of the homeless and people who are lazy and won't clean up after themselves. The best place to find a restroom in the day is in Mc Donalds or fast food restaurants and the public library. At night it is a bit harder though, only some fast food restaurants are open so your options are limited

  48. I was raised overseas, lived in the Middle East (Jeddah, 🇸🇦), but I traveled throughout parts of Asia, Europe, and Africa before coming to the U.S. back in 95. I remember so much, and it gave me perspective that a lot of people found “weird” or “confusing.” It’s like, the sky above your head isn’t all there is out there. It’s why now in my 30s I’m picking my languages back up (Japanese included) and really would like to spread my wings again and see the world through my grown up eyes. If people ever get the chance, please do yourself justice and experience a different country. Prepare, do your research, and it’ll be a time you’ll never forget. I’m happy for this family and these kids. I hope the kids cherish this gift from their parents. I love these interviews!
