  2. In 1967 I was in the Marine Corps and stationed at the Futema Marine Air Base on Okinawa. I spent 13 months there and I loved every minute. I was a Ground Radio Repairman. Six days a week we boarded trucks to ride over to Camp Foster where there was a Depot Level repair facility. We repaired electronics equipment that had been damaged in Vietnam. I loved the Okinawan people. They were friendly, hard working, and honest. Lots of us would hang out at the Bar Marie in the city of Futema. I got out of the Marines in 1968 and went to college at Florida State University. I had planned on returning to Okinawa to live and work, but I met my wife in college not long before I graduated, so my life went off in a different direction. I'm 75 now but still have fond memories of Okinawa.

  4. Thats really interesting that there's a prejudice against people who work out in Japan. Here in the US if you go to the gym you're praised for being healthy, in shape and disciplined. Great video by the way.

  5. I know a lot of younger japanese people don't want to keep sticking with japan's indirect culture, but if nobody speaks up, nothing is going to change. I understand respecting your elders, but japanese culture takes it to like a feudal level.

  7. The part about being able to speak your native language anywhere is the realest. I always feel super privileged and a bit guilty that I can just speak with anyone in the world and have them pretty much understand me. It's still fun to learn other languages, though.

  8. My time on Okinawa was some of the best years of my life. Haven’t been back in Japan for about a few years now but hopefully this pandemic calms down enough where I can go back soon. Loving your content so far, keep it up!!

When I was in Japan I felt really safe as a woman and the only really unpleasant situation I encountered was from a group of drunk men who were peeing into a plant pot in front of a train station entrance and in between a restaurant's outdoor tables. When I walked past them, trying to basically run around them, one of them turned around and started peeing in my direction and the other 2 started to do the same and they were laughing. (My father was with me. But i was walking on their side of the street) I was super shocked. So I would say stay away from drunks on the streets.

  10. One of my fondest memories of my first visit to Japan back in 2017 is an interaction I had with an elder businessman. I was inside Tokyo Station looking up at the signage to figure out which train I needed to take. I must have looked lost because he came up to me out of nowhere and asked in English "Excuse me, but do you need some help?". I was so taken aback, I responded "Oh, thank you so much, but I'm okay." Here he was, dressed in a suit holding a briefcase, most likely busy with going to work or a meeting (it was mid-day), took the time to stop and help a potentially lost foreigner. This one interaction really spoke to me about the kindness of local Japanese people, creating inside of me a deep love and respect for Japan 💓

This is one of the best sociological channels on Japan that exists, I was tired of my western compatriots who had completely biased or exclusively positive opinions on Japan without understanding all the subtleties of the country. Here we have the right to a wide range of opinions which is very rich to better try to discern Japan objectively

And I think, foreigners like me are the ones who experience a lot of racism. foreigners like the one's you have interview are mostly adored by Japanese people because of how they look. just saying though, but next time I would want you to interview south East Asians, africans, black Americans, and Indians, and even Chinese people.

  21. I have lived in Japan for 5 years now. I’ve always felt safer here than anywhere that I’ve lived in the US. Saying that there are still issues here in Japan like stalking and aggressive behavior from Japanese women. Also ignoring situations when foreigners are being mistreated. A Japanese man was videotaping up my daughters dress on an escalator in Yokohama and many people saw it and did nothing. We only noticed when we turned around and he was sitting on the escalator with his camera. People around us were pointing or laughing but did nothing. Japanese Men have followed my daughter and I all around Tokyo or back home. It’s definitely scary at times.

  22. I live in Honolulu and bought a new car earlier this year. The salesman didn’t look Japanese but had a Japanese first name, which I asked him about. He turned out to be half Japanese and half African American and had lived in Japan as a kid. His family had moved to Hawaii because of feeling out of place in Japan. In Hawaii his looks are nothing out of the ordinary at all.

  25. I find it's interesting how in Japan, it's "Japanese" and "foreigners" but in western countries, we're mostly a large range of foreigners from different countries that can all speak English and other languages xD Interracial dating is super common as a result.

  29. Asking people their favorite animé is an interesting concept. It’s always nice hearing other people’s insights on the type of shows and films they’re watching. At the end of the day, animé is considered a masterpiece on its own. Animators don’t get much credit, which I find unfortunate. Hopefully animators would get extensive recognition one way or another.

  30. I liked the answers of the third guy best. He had the most substance. But the fourth guy (final interviewee) also surprised me (in a good way). I personally find Japanese men to be mostly quite handsome and I was always attracted to them in my younger years. I am only 5'3" (160 cm) and was thin so size was never an issue. But this was 50 years ago and Japanese boys/men in those days (in NYC) were much less likely to date an American girl, so I was mostly out of luck! And I wasn't hideous to look at either... It was the cultural differences and sometimes a language barrier. Plus, any relationship that got serious would have been disapproved by one or both families. Things are so different now!

Also, I heard from JapanesePod101 that if you really want to learn Japanese, watch JDrama instead of anime, because conversations in dramas there are more realistic and not over exaggerated (although I know people who learned through anime).   36. I moved to Japan 3 weeks ago, and was trying to find a local mall and got lost in the side streets. Saw an elderly couple walking, and asked if they knew where x mall was in Japan. The lady had a walker, and smiled (I think, her eyes looked like they were anyway), and she said to follow her. Her husband tailed along in the back. She asked where I was from, my age, ect,. and I followed her maybe 5 mins or so since I wasn't too far from where I needed to be. But just the fact she took the time from her walk to show me where to go was really sweet.

  39. As a Latino who has lived in Japan, I can say that Japanese people did not know much about Latin America except for the things they may have seen on TV or similar. Once I tried to explain where I was from and the young Japanese lady had no idea! I was confused because I thought Japanese people were more "cultured" per se, but they were genuinely curious to learn, which is why it didn't bother me as much when they didn't know about Colombia (where I was born). I lived in Okinawa and the people are different from mainland Japan, as they are more warm and inviting! Latin America is not all negative! In Colombia and the rest of Latin America, we have some of the most intelligent people in the world! We are not just "poor" people! We are rich not only in finance, but also in culture, family, unity, friendship and can't fail to mention, beautiful people inside and outside! Japanese people have to learn that Latin America is so much more than just Peru and Brazil. We have an immense amount more to offer the world! I will say that I ❤️Okinawa until the day I die, but my soul and spirit will always be Colombian!

  40. I’m American and Muslim with no Arab heritage but this was so awesome to see especially as a huge lover of both Japan and the Arab cultures. I love this channel thanks so much for this video. That first girl is a wonderful excellent example of how to properly discuss a balanced positive/negative experience without turning into a sloganeering resentful activist. It’s okay that not everyone understands you, smile at the fact that humans have free will and differences. Best to assume others are naive or misinformed and forgive them rather than to label them and assume they are bad. Mashallah/God bless ❤️

  41. I love how they say they don't watch anime but they've watched quite a bunch. In my country if a person says they don't watch anime, we expect nothing. Zero. But for Japan, the few famous anime series everyone mentioned is part of their general knowledge. It's just in their culture and that's so cool.

However when the guy started talking in Japanese they become more comfortable, that's cute! Hope takashii asked them more in Japanese but this is an english content.   43. Met my wife in Japan, while I was in the Marines. Got married, had a son. Been happily married for 31 years. Now have a 22 month old Granddaughter who is the world to us. Would not give it up for all the money in the world.

  50. I think most people from Japan don't really know what different religions are. So the negativity didn't reach Japan as much and neither did the stereotypes to the extent that they will tie that to the Muslim identity always. At the same time, the only thing that does reach them is the news about terrorist attacks, so I can imagine that some might worry about that.
