  7. When I first moved to Tokyo, my biggest cuture shock was the " Honne-Tatemae" concept that is so deeply ingrained in the Japanese people. I was born and grew up in Switzerland with the background of Dutch-German. And both Dutch & German people are known for their no-nonsense, straightforward blunt way of speaking. It's the total opposite of the Japanese in general.

  11. The grass is always greener on the other side. Most of the things the interviewed envy about foreign countries are reasons I prefer Japan. For example people doing whatever they want means that you may have to deal with noisy neighbors, and people not caring about what they wear means that you may see something you really dislike while doing outside activities

  12. I’m from Africa; In October 2012 my father committed suicide, 3 months later I had gotten a chance to come to the US 🇺🇸 and living here since then. I have a good job, a car, a house taking vocations to different places and everything I dreamed about but man I’m still struggling with my father’s death. The question “ Why he committed suicide “ after talking to me 3 hours prior is still a misery. I have done therapy, talked to church leaders, talked to people who have lost their loved ones in same way and everything but that shit don’t go away. I feel so bad for Japanese people. I’m in nursing school now I will graduate in the next 1 year and I wanna travel the world helping people who need medical and mental help. Love you all

  18. Most of the interviewed people seem to have a very "romanticised" perception of "western men". I noticed that they describe what you normally see in Hollywood movies of some "cool guy" kinda MC, which is obviously incorrect and will likely lead to their disappointments at the end as all fantasies usually do, but I guess that won't be my problem at the end of the day XD. Respect to the girl in the green at the end, at least she went with a more "niche" option and not the cliché Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Bradley Cooper, Johnny Depp, Leo Dicaprio etc. And thanks for your work Takashii-san, you're a star!

  19. The man in the polka dot outfit and his friend brought up something I always thought about. I wasn’t sure if there was something I didn’t know about the suicide rate (like, another reason it’s high, aside from what he mentioned), but it makes me really sad to think that it’s really strict even for children. Not being able to express yourself is something I never really had to worry about—that would be so strange, I can’t imagine it. Thank you for the interviews—as usual, very interesting!

  21. i am a veteran that served from 2010 to 2015 and while i personally never got to see Okinawa myself, many of my marines and friends i served with had been stationed there. the overall feelings and stories they gave me painted a very consistent picture. the vast majority of the americans stationed there were well behaved and deeply loved the country but every so often one marine or sailor would go out in town and ruin everything for everyone. some of the crimes committed were disgusting. understandably the local population would be furious at some of the horrible things that had happened. i can speak for myself as well as many of my colleges that served through similar situations on american bases or in Bahrain / etc. we would all be punished for the acts of the guilty individuals even when we didnt know them or were in completely different battalions. it also makes the local populations view and treat all of us as if we are the same. in the end we all feel very frustrated at the situation in general. we understand how local people would hate us or not trusting of us. it would be common that we would be refused from even entering local shops and restaurants. its unfortunate how the acts of a few people paint a picture for an entire group. when one of these situations does happen, they have to protect the guilty individuals not only from the local people but from their own fellow marines and sailors as well- this is because we are just as furious and would want to hurt them for what they did. when one of these things happen it not only hurts the local community but it also hurts how others see and treat us as well. i hate that this happens and i hate the criminals that would do such things. they do not deserve to serve with us and i am glad they are kicked out of the military and usually punished after. okinawa and japan in particular are very dear friends and allies to the americans and i hope that never changes.

  25. I used to work in Japanese multinational company, and I have this Japanese boss who was so busy in front of his computer. When I went to his direction to get something, I glanced at his laptop's monitor and he was just playing solitaire. He was just pretending to do some work trying to look busy, and I think this is the case for most salaryman. Pretend to work even if work is done just so you can please your boss, and your colleagues won't think your lazy.

  32. I totally agree with "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." We should always be aware of the customs and cultural norms of the country that we are visiting. Instead of feeling indignant (especially when the host country customs are very different from what you are used to.) and entitled, insisting that the host country try to accomodate you, I guess it may be more helpful to make an effort to understand and adjust. Ignorance shouldn't be an excuse or license to get away with behaviors that irk the local. I find that one usually has a smoother or more pleasant time in another country when one is grateful for the land which one stands on at the moment. I guess it's being a gracious guest who is respectful of the host's home; awareness/being more mindful, open-minded to be willing to understand others, humility and most of all, being considerate to others, to one's surroundings, can make one a welcomed guest.

  37. I got stopped by the cops a ton of times while living in Japan, as a black guy. One time, I got grabbed up , thrown in jai for hours, and it was mistaken identity. Pretty rough treatment for foreigners overall in Japan. They got a Napoleon complex. Edit2: I like Japanese people , Asian people , all people … in japan , cops were fucked up, a lot of coldness, too much stress , anti love going on over there.

When i explain about the Ramadhan to my Japanese language teacher, she get a little bit confused about the practices that she said "do they ok on fasting the whole day" or she ask "so if you and your friend go to cafe during the Ramadhan, what will they do??"

Instead of randomly picking any Arab he meets, he made sure to include people from various Arab regions, who themselves have different mindsets and opinions, different social situations between the raised, the resident, the student, and visitor, AND it covered different aspects of living in Japan.   50. I’m visiting Japan in two weeks and I’m heavily tattooed. My Japanese teacher (she’s a native) always says that I will be fine since I’m a foreigner. But seeing people still having rather negative feelings towards tattoos makes me a little worried. Well, I guess the worst that could happen is that I’m unable to visit any onsen 🙈
