  1. I enjoyed the insightful comments from each woman you interviewed. I especially appreciated that each was able to remain strong in the sense of her own beauty outside the Japanese norms and expectations. Yet, each knew how to adjust a little to Japanese standards in order to navigate life more easily. The clone culture in Japan is very strong. By the way they dress and the colour palette they choose, you can immediately categorize women (and men) as to age and socio economic status. Japanese women have told me that they envy my "ability" to wear certain colours they "can't" wear without enduring a lot of pushback. I also recall the shock when I removed my jacket on a hot day to reveal a very modest--boat neck with no straps, no cleavage, no midriff--but sleeveless top. Sleeveless!?! several people exclaimed. It's too hot, I said. Then again, I had a firm awareness that had I put my jacket back on I would have gained nothing other than a dry cleaning bill. Besides, I am not Japanese so I feel no obligation to copy their standards; plus, I wasn't there permanently. They wouldn't think about me for very long after I left. Even if I were staying, I'd never gain acceptance by slavishly adopting Japanese standards. So, bottom line, it's best to be myself and I am totally at ease with that.

  2. I love Japanese elders. I'll never forget when I was travelling alone in Osaka, a group of smiling silver haired elders invited me to join their picnic and asked me lots of questions about where I come from. They even wrote down their address to send them a postcard. On the street, I was often approached and asked if I needed help by them, sometimes several times a day.

  4. Yokosuka Japan. I was in the U.S. Navy 1967 to 1971 and our ship was Home ported in Yokosuka for a while when we were not on line in the Gulf of Tonkin. I'm sure Yokosuka is much different now than it was then. I enjoyed my time in Yokosuka. I think Yokosuka was one of the main bases for the Japanese Navy during the war. I'm 74 years old and live 8n Big Bear Lake, California. Enjoy watching your video's. I wish you success.

  5. My father was invited to Japan to speak about his book regarding the importance of communication. I have been invited there for skate tournaments, break dance competitions, soccer, and basketball. In these settings there was so much honor, and respect. Outside of those experiences there are several times both of us have been, misjudged, mis-appropriated, and discriminated upon by the same culture for no reason other than the color of our skin. My experience with this has led me to believe this: Like every single other country in the world, Japan has decent people and assholes, and like every single other country the decent deal with people based on the content of their character and the assholes continue to exhibit logistical fallacies. Regardless where one is from it is all our responsibility mind ourselves to proper behavior, because failure to do so, in a very direct way, makes you an asshole that is ruining the world. Seems like too many people in all cultures are okay with the latter, and that is, by my logic, THE ACTUAL PROBLEM. Bless.

  8. I‘m from Germany and my husband is Japanese. And we life in Japan. Now we want childrens and your videos are so interesting for me. How the people are feeling beeing half japanese. Sometimes I‘m scared that my kids will get problems to be half but than I see all this great people and it feels so good. Because of the Covid it‘s really hard to find friends but I hope if its getting better that I can find some lovely friends like them!

  9. I love Japan. As a former Marine, I was stationed in Okinawa. It's a beautiful place and I enjoyed my year and a half over there. My aunt lives there and I can't wait to go back to see her. I used to be fluent in Japanese, but as they say; if you don't use, you lose it. Great interviews and the feedback was spot on! 👌🏾

This was interesting… one of my good friends is half Japanese and half black… she traveled back and forth between both countries when she was younger… she told me once how she felt like a foreigner and it was difficult for her to live in Japan… she said she felt more comfortable living in the US for the same diverse reasons… I hope these interviews open/start some type of dialog on this issue… great stuff!

  12. I grew up half Japanese in Canada. My mom moved here when she started our family and a huge part of her job was Japanese-English translation, which meant a lot of my childhood was also teaching her proper formal English as we learnt it/proof-reading her work. I regret not pushing her to teach us Japanese, but she had been translating all day (on top of her actual job tasks) while working long hours. Now I use her as a personal translator when we travel but still sad I can’t fully understand/feel disconnected.

  13. Japan is still the 3rd largest economy behind US and China. If you ask the same questions to Americans, Germans, French and any ordinary citizens of developed countries, they would also share the sentiment that they are struggling. Grass is always greener on the other side and people always want to have more things regardless of where they are in life.

  14. When my daughter was little she carried a stuffed toy dog with her every place. It made her feel connected and grounded in unfamiliar situations. It helped her feel safe. It seems like this is what this man is also doing...after being bullied for so long, he's created his own friend to carry with him in tough moments. It might be easier to love his 2d being because she will never hurt him. He said it saved his life, so he must have had suicidal thoughts in the past, and that is awful & sad. What needs to be fixed is the culture of adult bullying in the work place. No one should feel alone like that man did.

  19. I’ve been living in Japan for the past 3 months and this is my impression so far. There is so much silent social pressure here in Japan. It’s like you have to be busy because everyone is busy. You have to be pretty and poised because all ladies are. I think they forget that at the end of the day, it’s their choice to be enveloped in stress or be free from it.

  23. I am a sansei who grew up in Hawaii. My father was in the 442 Regimental headquarters and it was important to him to show his loyalty to America. America was our country and it represented a sense of security and a strong foundation for all of us. These times are challenging because the trust level is not what it used to be. I am sad but glad my parents are not exposed to the current US culture because everything it stands for is no longer what it was when they were alive.

  24. As a long-time foreign resident living in Japan, I found this quite interesting. Coming from a multicultural nation (Canada) it is tempting fault Japanese society for a lack of tolerance to difference. But while this is generally true, and it can be an annoyance and even barrier full participation in Japanese society, I think this reality is actually harder on Japanese people living in Japan. I think that being ‘foreign’ actually gives me more freedom because people don’t expect me to always conform to social or cultural expectations…and many of my Japanese friends tell me they’re a bit jealous of this! The negative side of this is that Japanese people do tend to be nervous about interacting with foreign people here because they can’t predict how they will act, or whether they will properly follow social rules, etc. But to be honest, I find myself thinking the same way after being here so long. A certain amount of social homogeneity can be comforting!

After 30 years in Japan, having my own English School and now a restaurant, I was actually REALLY, REALLY impressed by their English, and also their Japanese. Takashi's English is great. But most Japanese people even though they learn English in JHS and HS for 6 years can't really come close to this kind of level. Not bashing Japanese, just impressed by their English coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Syria.

I'm especially interested in people who are on the autistic spectrum as plain, direct language is often preferred in communication. I wonder how this fits in with the Japanese style of communication where things are often implied rather than said directly.   36. Here in Brazil we have the large japonese population outside Japan, so the anime culture is strong here. My two best friend are half-japonese. Yu Yu Hakusho, Sant Seiya and Dragon Ball are huge here. This three was my first experience with Anime. since I was 8 old I never stopped watching Anime. I recommend for you the most popular right now in Brazil, Attack on Titan, Kimetsu no Yaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen.

I've never been to Japan, but what I've noted with my observations towards Japanese folks, is the homogeneity of their socieety, so when they meet a foreign individual, the first response is curiousity, that's appreciated, I haven't noted the malice that Black people are constantly exposed to in Eurocentric societies. As indicated in the vid, unless you violate societal norms and taboos, you can generally live and go on with your life as any ordinary Japanese citizen does.

  40. I met my wife at a church in Aomori in northern Japan when I worked for a US private company there years ago. She's from Vietnam and was studying in Japan then. Culturally speaking, it isn't big differences between viet and Japanese cultures. We've been happily married and enjoying travel the world since.

It was weird to me noticing that a lot of Japanese-American and half-Japanese folks weren't able to speak any Japanese when I got to California.   42. One of my teachers in my junior high school has recently moved to Japan. When I reached out to her, she said, "Japan is a very nice country if you're going here for a vacation, but if you are going to live here, well that's another story." But still, I am glad that she got by and is starting a family there with her husband. What I like about this video is that you are exploring both sides; the good and the bad. I have been in Japan and like the one those girls said, you can easily blend, but about the difficult to speak, always have to explain that you are a Nikkei gaikokugin from Brazil. Brazil has the largest japanese community out side of Japan.

  49. They deserve a good home where they can feel safe and loved. Sadly it's not always the parents fault sometimes it can be the school like bullying for example, or the person just feels lonely. Parents may not always understand what their kid is going through.

  50. These kids are amazing. They learned English and speak it so well despite the informal beginnings of learning. It just shows how incredible the power of self-motivated learning can be. We should all learn from this in how to teach and let lessons stick with out students, no matter what the subject is, the language is, or what age people are.
