I lived in China for ten years (2010- 2020). I loved China. We have people there who are like family to us, who we love and miss dearly. But I watched its attitude towards foreigners shift from welcoming to openly hostile. In 2019 I watched China arrest Canadian citizens purely in retaliation to Canada arresting Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Huawei. I watched their society transform with "social credit scores" and go cashless, forcing foreigners into systems that are difficult for us to navigate. Then in 2020 I watched as China abused foreigners: I saw foreigners removed from their apartments for no other reason than that they were foreigners, while hotels refused to accept foreigners. Foreigners whose visas were expiring during the pandemic were not permitted to renew their visas, while the borders closed and there were no flights out of China, which left many of us in terrifying limbo. Then there's the political tension: China is adversarial with the U.S. and its western coalition, and is being the aggressor towards Taiwan, which risks war with all of its neighbors and the West, which leaves foreigners uncertain about the safety of residing in China. After witnessing how they treated foreigners during the pandemic, just imagine what they would do to us if war broke out!
So, why have foreigners left China? Because China feels unsafe, unpredictable, and hostile.
