Male lions always do two things in fights with each other: destroy the genitals of the opponent so they are recognized as useless to any females, and they can never produce cubs that will threaten the domain; and sever the spine. Male lions in particular have very weak lower spinal areas (which is why tigers that used to be held in captivity with them almost universally kill lions with ease - bigger, heavier, faster, stronger, smarter, higher bite force, can attack with two paws instead of one, and know right where the spine is).
