For the rest of us who aren't anywhere near our actual potential, we can still reach a personal peak within all of the subjects a lot later in life, but it's entirely dependant on how much effort and time we put into it.

  12. So I clicked on this video thinking it was a 200k+ views video, with the excellent thumbnail, attractive title and honestly excellent amount of clickbait. Color me suprised to see the video having a few hundred of views with an incredible quality of animations, voiceover and topic coverage. As a (future) data fellow I say bravo! I hope men who are disappointed with their performance (for lack of a better word) on dating apps will watch this and feel better knowing the odds are not in their favor in any way. Even being statistically more generous with their likes puts men at a disadvantage in some cases! Some apps are actually coded to show the profiles of users who like indiscriminately to fewer other users.

I found this interesting tidbit in the Discussion section of the dutch research paper: "Third, in the subgroup of adolescents who had repeated a grade (16.9%), inverse relative-age effects were observed; the relatively young were thinner (weight and BMI), had higher school marks, and reported less depressive symptoms than their relatively older peers." This implies that older students get unhappy when repeating a grade, possibly because the now too large age gaps makes them fit in less well despite being older (purely hypothetically). Regarding the fact that younger students score relatively worse than the older group: it would be interesting to see research about what happens to school results specifically when everyone starts a year older. The gap later in life would probably become much smaller because of the "Matthew" effect, although it would still be there. Btw it would be nice if you put the sources in the description as well. It's nice (and required imnsho) that they're there in the video, but makes it hard to find a specific one after having finished the vid.

  25. I literally coded my own dating simulator on python just a few weeks ago. I am seeingly broadly similar behaviour. The main difference is that I probabilistically modify the self-perceived beauty, and crucially made attractiveness a relative quantity. So if you're a 6/10 you are expoentially likely to like someone who is more attractive than you, and less so if less than you. With the probabilistic difference in beauty, you get dynamics more similar to what we see in incels: low scoring men out of 10 are withour partners, whereas good looking one are more likely in a relationship.

As a 47 year old, I leant to see things this way: I cannot be better than a 20 year old peak version of me, but since at my 20s I never reached my peak, I can be better than the 20 year old man I used to be. It’s not impossible. It’s just harder. For instance, someone who starts off being very picky might lower their standards after not getting enough matches. Or those who would get matches would slow down their use of the app (so less than 100 profiles/user/day) This dynamic aspect could add another layer of realism to the simulation, making it an even more powerful tool for understanding the intricacies of dating apps. Just a thought, but either way, the video was excellent !
