Thank you so much for this video.
A bit of background as to why this is so meaningful to me.
I was diagnosed with a tumor growing on my vagus nerve, scientifically a Glomas Vagale Paraganglioma. It is very rare, but thankfully it is slow growing and not cancerous. The tumor is over 8 cm ร 6 cm x 3 cm, with tentacles that grow out of it. It s I'm a very small space, and presses on my brain stem and my spinal cord. Needless to say it is extremely painful. I lost the use of my left side, lost my ability to swallow because my left vocal chord is paralyzed, and more. I had to retire from my job as a federal law enforcement officer.
Doctors prescribed lots of opiods and Benzodiazepines to help with the anxiety of knowing there is something in your head that is going to kill you.. after years of this, I was a veritable zombie, and so I quit using them.
But that really brought back the pain. I didn't even get much sleep, because no matter how I laid on my pillow I was putting pressure on the tumor and surrounding nerves. I could sleep for about an hour. I was constantly exhausted and in terrible pain.
Enter cannabis, in edible form. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, yet I had never even tried cannabis. My job, plus my time in the Army precluded any cannabis use. About 5 years ago, my doctor and I had a very long conversation. I was at my wits end and contemplating ending my life. We began talking about cannabis, I did tons of research, and my doctor wrote a prescription for me.
It has literally saved my life. I can manage the pain, with no addiction, no feeling like a zombie, and the THC is a little bonus, since I don't drink alchohol. I have become an advocate for its use , especially for older people, my age or older. (I'm 56) we grew up being taught it was the devil's lettuce. It was a gateway drug, which it is not. I've never had the slightest desire to stick a needle in my eyelid and shoot up heroin.
I make all of my own edibles, from butter, to candies to MCT oil infusions, all made with natural ingredients. And a freely will give them to others I know who are suffering from chronic pain. I do always tell them to talk with their doctor first. I have even begun growing my own Indica strains to use in my edibles.
Cannabis has such amazing properties, and I am so grateful you made this video. Science rocks. So does your channel by the way.

As a strength athlete, I regularly get muscle knots ranging from minor and pretty serious to a point where I had trouble walking. (looking at you, hamstrings). Sometimes they spasm, sometimes I don't even know they're there until pressure is applied. However, I've learned for myself that massaging the affected muscle(s) with a solid object like a golf ball, tennis ball, baseball or foam roller depending on how hard or soft I want it to be until the pain transitions from a sharp ache to a tender burn and my skin turns red. This transition is how I know that muscle has released enough and is too irritated to continue. If the muscle knot is minor, this is where I will usually stop and drink about 16oz of water (usually more). This will help my kidneys and speed up flushing the toxins from the muscles and my body. I usually find that my muscles will not be bruised and ache the next day after this.
However, for serious muscle knots, they will usually be accompanied by spasms or severe pain. I will do the above massage and after that I will then run a hot bath with Epsom salts and soak for about 10 to 20 minutes, just allowing myself to relax. After I am done with my bath, I will hydrate and focus on replacing lost electrolytes like magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium through a meal and protein shake. I will also get enough protein and carbs to refuel. I haven't had an issue since.

24 Y/O here! This might be controversial, but rolling my back, tight hips, inner thighs, glutes, calves, and feet out with a hard foam roller or lacrosse ball has drastically reduced MY recovery time for running, and biking. I find that when Iโm lazy and donโt roll out, my recovery time is longer, and Iโm a lot more sore. I have also found foam rolling my back (with breathing) has been one of the only things that really lowers my back pain. It might take us a while to get quality information on this topic for future suggested uses, but I will probably continue to use rollers as long as Iโm not feeling lazy.

Iโm recovering from chronic traumatic brain injury, which caused an extended coma, this what PT, OT and SLP is all about, relearning to do these basic things, like walk properly. However, Iโve found that some things came back, like pottery, others, like crocheting, took ages to relearn. I still struggle with this, but each day, I continue to strive, to rebuild these path ways. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Iโve loved learning with you guys!

Soooo grateful for you guys and all you do, to serve such a broad public audience, and to make education that matters so accessible. I can only imagine how many people (myself included) that these videos impact and ignite positive habit changes. Also happy to be reading and hearing more and more of the actual science coming out about negative impacts on smoking weed. When I used to smoke weed pretty regularly I'd tell my doctors, and theyd brush it off and wouldnt make any comments regarding my health, which at first didn't mean anything to me, but later didn't seem to make sense, due to exactly what you guys say: breathing in ANYTHING besides air, let alone ashes, is not healthy for anyone. Addiction is so powerful, it will excuse these objective truths...but this video is very radical for that, and makes me smile knowing it exists :)

One weird thing that happened to me with my tattoo; i got my tattoos in 2021, one on my right caff which was in march and one on my left arm in july. did the after care routine, healed nicely with no complications. a year ago in 2023 (2 years after having the tattoos), i got sick, went to the doctors (got tested for strep throat), and got antibiotics. After i finished the antibiotics, i took some probiotics to balance out. While i was taking the probiotics, my first tattoo on my leg, which is the oldest, starting flaring up and itching, ONLY duting the time i was taking probiotics. My arm was completely fine, and as soon as i stopped taking my probiotics, the flaring and itching went away and my tattoo went back to normal ๐ค like i said, both tattoos healed perfectly fine, no infections or anything that had red flags of improper care, and only my leg on flared, but not my arm! And they are still fine to this day!

1:01 I felt physical agony and true psychic damage at the thought of my *balls being sliced in half and spread open for the world to see.* a pain I will never experience, but I will suffer in my night mares every time I close my eyes. Thank you, a more potent and meaningful Fatherโs Day gift I could not ask for, everything a father is: emotionally and mentally scarring, a life lesson on what you are, knowledge of how things work, searing non physical pain, and the over whelming feeling of compassion at the end of it all.
Not all dadโs are perfect, but all deserve thanks, but if you see kindness, thereโs always time to give them a second shot.
Thank you dad for picking me up when everything was bad, no matter our history in the past. Love ya to bits, Iโve not forgiven you, but I donโt have to to accept who you are now and to help you out too.

Omgggg man, your story brought tears to my eyes! That sounds like absolute torture!!! That part where you were just repeating โget it out get it outโ.. man that took me back to some horrible memories.
I had cancer and had a thyroidectomy, a full neck dissection with something like 30 lymph nodes removed in my neck and chest and the recovery from that was so much worse than anybody had ever told me it would be. Whatever they used to strap my head down during the surgery left giant welts on the back of my head, those hurt worse than my neck did at first. Then the next day was excruciating, it was seriously the worst day of my life, all the pain medication had made me constipated, I hadnโt had a movement in like 3 days, hadnโt eaten in 2 days, and my stomach was in so much pain, it was seriously a 10 for me. This was last year right as Covid was starting so the doctor was too busy to come see me; I just sat there rocking back and fourth with my mom all day long like begging her and the nurse to get me some gas medicine or some milk of magnesia or something.... I canโt imagine having to go through that kind of pain for weeks, that is some seriously gnarly, psychological torture. You certainly seem like a strong individual! I had so many breakdowns during my recovery lol... had to go to physical therapy because of all this nerve damage and muscle loss in my neck and shoulders, I still canโt feel my left ear... Anyways, I definitely feel lucky to wake up today and be healed up and living a mostly normal life again. I didnโt mean for this comment to be so long lol

I am blind in one eye. It happened after birth and no one is quite sure why. But by age 9 I was having a cataract removed. But that was a new procedure at that time and the surgery removed the cataract but my eye sort of "died" after it. Most of my life it has had very little consequence for me getting along, driving has been no problem. I realize my depth perception is not normal but in fact, I somehow just know where things are relative to me. I do take extra care when parking a car because those are unique situations each time. But I have never banged another car due to my disability. For my own safety I cannot play games with fast moving balls such as tennis. As I have aged, I suffered a tear in the retina of my healthy eye. It was the result of a vitreous detachment that tugged at my retina. I was lucky in that the placement of that tear was way on the periphery of my vision so I don't suffer from noticeable vision loss.
Now for my soapbox coming from the voice of experience. Vitreous detachment is a normal function of aging, retinal detachment is not...loss of retina=lost of vision. The symptoms of these detachments are similar. Only one goes away and the other does not. Mostly I experienced flashing lights, but everyone is different. My main message is if you experience anything unusual like flashing lights, get to a retina specialist ASAP! Time is vision! It wasn't that I ignored it, but my lifelong ophthalmologist couldn't detect it. So, we let it go until the tear was causing me visual problems. (I had laser repair). I would suggest that before you ever need a retinal specialist, do your homework, find out who nearby is good, go in and get to know him/her so you are an established patient, so if and when you have an issue, you can be seen immediately. I waited for days to be seen even with a referral and one eye. That's our medical system today. Everyone will have a vitreous detachment if you live long enough, but the retinal detachment is a whole other thing that is a medical emergency. One eye or two, no one wants to lose vision.

Not saying it's for everyone, but I highly recommend everyone with autoimmune, psychiatric, and autonomic issues, among others, to try a diet lower in plant chemicals and devoid of seed oils and grains. My animal-based diet has been a game-changer for managing hEDS, POTS, Mast Cell Activation (avoid high histamine foods!), Gastroparesis, Hashimoto's, and the all bs they imply. Fresh ruminant animal meat is the ultimate elimination diet. Get well and add the other stuff back later. (Or not.)

If you can break an opioid addiction, run for your life. If you've never had any, don't even try a vicodin, a Tylenol 3, anything! You must understand this one thing, it doesn't matter if you come from a great family, with lots of money, a happy family or a poor background, if you are occupying a human body, you can become addicted, and it will happen before you even realize it. I promise, the tooth pain, back pain, broken arm etc. Will heal, and believe me, with or without painkillers it will hurt, so avoid them at all costs. Pain comes and pain goes, but having a LIFELONG problem you have to think about before every action you make isn't worth the buzz. You can be clean for 10 years and slip up and it's like you never stopped. So, if u can, take my advice and just take asprin, or Tylenol or ibuprofen. Don't change your chemistry forever... I have 7 years clean, it would be more like 15 years if I hadn't had a slip 7 years ago. Opioids are a poison, being finely tuned and created just for a handful of people to get richer, and they could care less if you die, these drugs cure nothing, treat nothing and only mask pain very little, just endure the pain and you will be stronger because of it.

Even if science could demonstrate that veganism or vegetarianism is the best option (which, in terms of sustainability and the environment, it is), some people simply CANNOT survive without animal products. On the other side of the spectrum, some people (such as those bitten by an infected Lone Star tick), lack the enzymes necessary to digest meat, and can go into anaphylactic shock if they try to eat any. Medically, there are a number of conditions that preclude one extreme or the other, but I don't know how many people actually fit into that broad category.
I DO know that the meat industry has lied to us for a very long time about the need to eat meat to get vit. B12 and protein, when B12 is created by bacteria in the soil and protein is created by plants (and both are consumed by ruminants and other plant-eating critters, assuming they're not eating plants from areas where the B12 bacteria haven't been destroyed by farming compounds, thus providing a concentrated source of protein, but not B12). I also know that the dairy industry has made it seem like it has the BEST source of calcium when, in fact, there are several other better, natural sources of calcium, including a range of plants. As for eggs, well, they never tried false science in ads ("The incredible, edible egg!" doesn't qualify) until they got Oprah and other shows to let them on to tell the public that eggs are good for you, when eating too many eggs clearly introduces too much cholesterol into the body.
More importantly - if you can't or won't give up eating animals, which is really a problem for the environment and over-consumption is horrible for health, or if you insist on being a vegan or whatever - GIVE UP EATING PROCESSED FOODS. They are probably the single worst source of nutrition and the most likely to make you sick.

I loved this, I too was in the Marines, 0331, 2002-06, and also went to college for Biology w/specs in Human Anatomy, driven to learn the body by the bullet wounds and carnage of IEDs. It is like we are twins. To answer your question on hang overs, which I rarely suffer anymore. If I drink a lot, I consume Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium capsules at some point during drinking, sodium I get with the food I eat. I have no racing heart in the morning, and my brain sure doesnt hurt. If I dont consume my precious [K], my heart will be beating at 120 bpm in the morning, which isn't pleasant.

Hey Justin. I experienced the EXACT SAME THING in 2014 because of Crohn's Disease. After many, many years of benign neglect (not really benign...), I finally obstructed from scar tissue in the terminal ileum. Your experience mirrors mine almost exactly in terms of what happened next. The NG tube was indeed the worst. Going in.... oh my! And I was on a decent amount of pain meds: it was like being forcibly probed by aliens! Then, after the surgery, came the THIRST. It was so so so so so so bad. Finally I got to drink and eat a liquid diet--problem was they took my morphine pump and put me on hyrdocodone alone and not very much at that. Previous to the surgery I had been taking likely too much hyrdocodone (it might have contributed to the blockage) and suddenly, just after getting too drink, I unknowingly went into withdrawal. The torture would not end. Obviously, I so related to your commentary at the end of this. When I finally got home, with some adjusted meds, I broke down and cried--literally cried, remembering the horror of the previous week or so. I hope it never happens again.

In the USA the USDA sets daily recommended intake DRI of macronutrients, vitamins and minerals based on age, gender, height, weight and activity level. This isnโt to lose weight, this is to make sure your body has the nutrition to run properly. Hereโs their link https://www.nal.usda.gov/human-nutrition-and-food-safety/dri-calculator The USDA also maintains a food database that gives you the macronutrient, vitamin and mineral content of over 12,000 foods and beverages that you can search here https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/ If you embrace your inner geek and want to download the entire database in Access or a csv file you can do that here https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/download-datasets.html I think diets need to be personalized that should start off with a blood test. Places like Weight Watchers or Nutrisystem or any organized planned put everyone on the same food but everyone has a different blood chemistry, a different medical history, so having them eat the same food doesnโt make sense. One person will have higher hemoglobin and lower LDL cholesterol than the next person. Someone may have kidney disease and is dehydrated which lowers their blood pressure so consuming peppers with capsaicin could make them pass out. If someone has heart problems and consumes too much potassium they might go tachycardic! Prepackaged diet foods tend to have appetite suppressants, caffeine, taurine and other stimulants in them to help you lose weight. Donโt go for the easy solution. Do your own homework, see where youโre at on a blood chemistry panel before you start a diet and design your diet to equalize your blood chemistry from there. Yes, it might seem like youโre taking a cup of water out of the ocean but youโll eventually drain the ocean and do it in a healthy way.

Hey Justin, thanks so much for sharing your story. I'm a huge fan of this channel and I never suspected that we'd share similar experiences! I've had several small bowel obstructions in the past that resolved themselves, but my last one was a closed loop obstruction that required surgery (happened just a month ago). The way you described your pain and NG tube experience sounded absolutely awful, I'm sorry you went through that. But I'm really glad you made it through and made this video. You are truly a warrior!
I had my colon removed back in 2018, which occurred over 4 surgeries, and in between, I lived with a temporary ileostomy. One of the four surgeries was due to a random complication where my stoma prolapsed and my small intestine began slowly falling out of my body. Unfortunately, the escaped bowel started to twist and became necrotic, so they needed to remove it. It was the most pain and fear I ever experienced, and I ended up losing about 2 feet of bowel! But I'm all good now!
Thanks again for making this video. Seeing the anatomy of obstructions was super fascinating. If you ever have the chance, please make a video about the anatomy of ostomies!

I wonder if we can tackle the question of dairy next? Some people are like, "oh dairy is an inflammatory food" or "dairy is only supposed to be for early life development and you shouldn't consume so much of it later in life" blah, blah, blah. But my personal experience with dairy is honestly that I seem super dependent on it for getting enough energy, and I usually have to depend on it for at least half my protein intake because meat definitely seems to be too hard for me to digest in large quantities. And then there's the question of how that effects tooth decay as well, because I was stuck avoiding dairy for an extended period of time over 2 pregnancies and my teeth took a definite turn for the worst after that, when prior to that, I had zero problems. Granted, I'm sure the overall answer to the dairy question is something like, "yes, but in moderation", but I'm curious about how your body digests it, why some people are lactose intolerant, why sometimes it can make you feel sicker during pregnancy (at least it did for me until I had a B6 supplement on a daily basis), etc.
By the way, I absolutely love these videos - they are super helpful and informative!
